Good to know

Eyja — your questions, answered

Why are two colours different from the pattern?
Brown (1401) and camel (1400) are no longer made. This kit has chocolate heather (0867) in place of the brown — colour A, the main colour: the whole body and sleeves and the ground of the yoke — and barley (1419) in place of the camel — colour B, the tan diamonds and zigzags in the yoke and on the cuff borders. Chocolate heather is a dark brown heather, a little darker and less red than the warm reddish-brown dress in the photo. Barley is a warm tan, a little darker and less golden than the camel in the photo. You can choose other shades in the colour picker.
Which size and length should I knit?
Five sizes — XS, S, M, L and XL — with a chest of 83, 88, 92, 97 and 101 cm and sleeves of 44 to 48 cm to the underarm. There are two lengths from the hem to the underarm: short, 58 to 64 cm, and long, 68 to 74 cm — 10 cm more. The dress is shaped at the waist: by our calculation it is about 87 to 104 cm round the hem and 76 to 93 cm at the narrowest point. In the photos the brown dress reaches just above the knee and the lilac one to mid-thigh; the pattern does not say which length each one is.
Will I have yarn left over?
The kit holds the amount for XL in the long length: 11 balls of chocolate heather, 1 of barley and 2 of white — 14 balls. In the long length XS uses 12 balls, S and M 13, and L 14. The short length takes one ball less of chocolate heather in every size.
How long is the dress in total?
The pattern gives only the length from the hem to the underarm. The yoke adds about 18 to 21 cm above that, plus the neckband (our calculation from the chart). How long the dress is on you depends on your height, so measure from your underarm down to where you want the hem before you choose. The two lengths differ only in the plain knitting below the waist shaping (20–24 cm or 30–34 cm), so that is where to change it if you want another length (our suggestion).
Is anything unclear in the pattern?
A few small things. The neckband ends “Cast off loosely in rib”, but there is no rib — it is a knit round, a purl round, an eyelet round and a purl round — so simply cast off loosely. The pattern lists 40 cm and 60–80 cm circular needles without saying when to use which: knit the body and start the yoke on the long one, change to the 40 cm when the yoke gets tight, as the pattern says, and keep it for the neckband (our reading). In XS the waist shaping ends at about the printed length to the underarm, so you go straight on to the yoke after the last increase (our calculation). The 2 stitch markers and the stitch holders are not in the materials list.
What is in the photos?
The first photo shows this brown version, the second the lilac version, which is sold as a separate kit (with milkyway, a pale lavender-blue, in place of the lilac). Both dresses are worn with a wide belt, which is not part of the pattern or the kit. The green sweater and the red cardigan on the other woman are different patterns.
Is this the same as the Eyjar kit?
No. Eyjar is a different pattern — a yoke sweater from Lopi 44. Eyja is this sweater dress from Lopi 26.
What does the kit with needles include?
4.5 mm (US 7) circular needles in 40 and 80 cm; 4.5 mm (US 7) double-pointed needles — ADDI, as named in the pattern. The pattern gives the longer circular as 60–80 cm; the kit has 80 cm, as the yoke starts with up to 256 stitches. The whole dress is knitted on one needle size.
