Good to know

Eyja — your questions, answered

What are the two versions?
The same dress in two colourways, with the same sizes, instructions, charts and amounts. Brown: A brown (1401), B camel (1400), C white (0051). Lilac: A lilac (1413), B garnet red (1409), C black (0059). A is the body, the sleeves and the ground of the yoke; B and C make the yoke pattern and the sleeve border, and C is also the eyelet edge at the cuffs and the neckband. One chart key gives the codes for both. Each version can be knitted short or long.
Can I still buy the colours in the photos?
Brown version: only white (0051) is still made; brown (1401) and camel (1400) are no longer made. Our brown kit uses 0867 chocolate heather for brown — a dark brown heather, a little darker and less red than the warm reddish-brown dress in the photo — and 1419 barley for camel — a warm tan, a little darker and less golden than the camel in the photo. Lilac version: garnet red (1409) and black (0059) are still made, but lilac (1413), the main colour, is no longer made, and no Léttlopi made today is lilac. Our lavender-blue kit uses 1702 milkyway, a pale lavender-blue, clearly paler and bluer than the lilac in the photo — a dress in it will not be lilac.
Which size and length should I knit?
Five sizes — XS, S, M, L and XL — with a chest of 83, 88, 92, 97 and 101 cm and sleeves of 44, 45, 46, 47 and 48 cm to the underarm. There are two lengths from the hem to the underarm: short, 58, 60, 62, 64 and 64 cm, and long, 68, 70, 72, 74 and 74 cm — 10 cm more. The dress is shaped at the waist: by our calculation it is about 87 to 104 cm round the hem and 76 to 93 cm at the narrowest point. In the photos the brown dress reaches just above the knee and the lilac one to mid-thigh; the pattern does not say which length each one is.
How much yarn do I need?
Léttlopi in 50 g balls, the same for both versions.
How long is the dress in total?
The pattern gives only the length from the hem to the underarm. The yoke adds about 18 to 21 cm above that, plus the neckband (our calculation from the chart). How long the dress is on you depends on your height, so measure from your underarm down to where you want the hem before you choose. The two lengths differ only in the plain knitting below the waist shaping (20–24 cm or 30–34 cm), so that is where to change it if you want another length (our suggestion); a dress longer than the long length takes more of A than the pattern lists.
Is anything unclear in the pattern?
A few small things. The neckband ends “Cast off loosely in rib”, but there is no rib — it is a knit round, a purl round, an eyelet round and a purl round — so simply cast off loosely. The pattern lists 40 cm and 60–80 cm circular needles without saying when to use which: knit the body and start the yoke on the long one, change to the 40 cm when the yoke gets tight, as the pattern says, and keep it for the neckband (our reading). In XS the waist shaping ends at about the printed length to the underarm, so you go straight on to the yoke after the last increase (our calculation). The 2 stitch markers and the stitch holders are not in the materials list.
Is this the same as Eyjar?
No. Eyjar is a different pattern — a yoke sweater from Lopi 44. Eyja is this sweater dress from Lopi 26.
Is everything in the photos part of the pattern?
The dresses are. Both are worn with a wide belt — tan leather with the brown dress, black with the lilac one — and with dark tights; none of these are part of the pattern. The woman beside the brown dress wears a green sweater, a black necklace and jeans, and the woman beside the lilac dress a red cardigan and dark trousers; those are not part of this pattern either.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 4 pages: the cover photo (the brown version), a page with a small photo, the materials for both versions, the sizes, gauge, all the instructions, the sleeve chart and the key, a page with the yoke chart, and a back page with the photo of the lilac version and Ístex’s address.
