Good to know

Endurreisn — your questions, answered

Can I still buy the colours in the photos?
For Black heather-Earth, yes — all eight colours are still made by Ístex. For Black-Colorful, nine of the fourteen are still made; five are not: fire red (9738) and monet blue (9735), both Álafosslopi, and the Léttlopi colours lilac (1413), orange (1410) and mustard (9264). Our colourful kit uses happy red (0047) for fire red — a solid, clear red; in the photo fire red looks lighter and a little pinker, so those motifs come out a deeper red — and blue tweed (1234) for monet blue, a mid blue with white flecks: a little deeper and a clearly purer, stronger blue than the greyish blue band in the photo. For the Léttlopi colours it uses milkyway (1702) for lilac, paler and bluer; apricot (1704) for orange, darker and browner; and mimosa (1703) for mustard, brighter and more yellow. These three are always one strand of a pair, so in every pair but one the other strand softens the difference; in the orange-with-mustard pair both strands change. Our shop adds “heather” to several names — light ash heather for ash (0054), lagoon heather for lagoon (9423) — so go by the colour numbers.
Which size should I knit?
Three sizes — S, M and L — with a chest of 93, 101 and 110 cm, 55 to 59 cm from the hem to the underarm and sleeves of 46 to 50 cm, all measured from the fold line of the hem. It is a long jacket, shaped at the waist: by our calculation about 96 (104) 113 cm round the hem and 83 (92) 100 cm at the waist.
How much yarn do I need?
Black-Colorful: Álafosslopi in 100 g balls — black (A) 3 (4, 5), fire red (L) 1 and monet blue (N) 1 — and Léttlopi in 50 g balls — lagoon (B) 2, glacier blue (C) 2 and one ball each of the nine others: 18 (19, 20) balls in all. Black heather-Earth: black heather (A) Álafosslopi 3 (4, 5), and Léttlopi — ash (C) 3, oatmeal (H) 1 and 2 each of grey, stone blue, light beige, murky and frostbite: 17 (18, 19) balls in all. Only the ground changes with the size.
How are the two yarns used?
The ground — with the outer half of the folded hems, the neckband and the crochet borders — is one strand of Álafosslopi. The pattern colours are two strands of Léttlopi held together and knitted as one: the chart keys give each colour as a pair of codes, for example lagoon with glacier blue (9423 + 1404) in the colourful version, or ash with grey (0054 + 0057) and murky with frostbite (1420 + 1417) in the earth one. Two strands of Léttlopi are about as thick as one of Álafosslopi (our note). In the colourful version two motif colours are single strands of Álafosslopi instead: fire red and monet blue. The hem facings on the inside are a single strand of Léttlopi, which keeps the folded edges thin.
How are the hems made?
Each hem starts with 5 rows (on the sleeves 5 rounds) of stocking stitch in a single strand of Léttlopi — violet on the body and crimson on the sleeves for Black-Colorful, frostbite and stone blue for Black heather-Earth — then, in Álafosslopi, a knit row, a fold line (a knit row from the wrong side on the body, a purl round on the sleeves) and 5 more rows before the chart starts. The neckband ends with a fold ridge in two strands of Léttlopi and 6 rows in one strand — lagoon for the colourful version, grey for the earth one. At the end the hems are folded to the inside along the fold line and slip-stitched down.
Do I have to cut my knitting?
Yes. The body is knitted in the round with a purl stitch at the beginning and end of each round, at the centre front. At the end you sew twice through each chain of purl stitches by machine with small straight stitches and cut carefully between the sewn rows.
How are the front borders made?
With a 6 mm crochet hook and the ground colour: 2 rows of single crochet up each front, worked loosely over the machine stitching and one stitch in, into every other row. In the second row of the right front you make 7 button loops of 4–5 chains, depending on the size of your buttons — the first at the neckline, the last just above the hem, the others evenly between. The pattern gives no button size.
Is anything unclear in the pattern?
A few small things. In size S the skip marks on the body chart leave 72 rounds, one more than the 71 in the text; knit the chart as marked — the difference is under 1 cm (our calculation). On the colourful sleeve chart two labels read “skip rnd size S og M” — “og” is Icelandic for “and”. The gauge is given over stocking stitch, but the whole jacket is stranded colourwork with two kinds of yarn, so knit your gauge swatch in the pattern (our suggestion). The 7 mm needles are printed with no US size, and the stitch holders for the underarms and the sewing machine for the steek are not in the materials list.
Is everything in the photos part of the pattern?
The jackets are, with their buttons — the colourful version on the cover, the earth version in the second photo. The pattern lists 7 buttons but gives no size or colour; the black top, the grey top and the jeans are not part of the pattern.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 4 pages: the cover photo; a page with a small photo of both versions, the materials for both, the sizes, the gauge and all the instructions; a page with the four Black-Colorful charts and the colour keys for both versions; and a page with the four Black heather-Earth charts and Ístex’s address.
