Good to know

Endurreisn — your questions, answered

Why are five colours different from the pattern?
Five of the pattern’s colours are no longer made. Two are single strands of Álafosslopi. Fire red (9738) is replaced by happy red (0047) — colour L: the red flame peaks above the waist, a red and gold band lower on the body, and red motifs on the sleeves and yoke. Happy red is a solid, clear red; in the photo the fire red looks lighter and a little pinker, with coloured flecks, so those motifs will be a deeper red. Monet blue (9735) is replaced by blue tweed (1234) — colour N: the blue zigzag band above the waist, a matching band on the sleeves and a few stitches near the top of the yoke. Blue tweed is a mid-blue with white flecks — a little deeper and a clearly purer, stronger blue than the greyish blue band in the photo. Three are Léttlopi colours, always used as one strand of a pair: lilac (1413) is replaced by milkyway (1702), orange (1410) by apricot (1704) and mustard (9264) by mimosa (1703). Milkyway is paler and bluer than lilac, apricot darker and browner than orange, and mimosa brighter and more yellow than mustard. In every affected pair but one only one strand changes, so the other strand softens the difference: the blends with milkyway (with heaven blue, violet or pink) look a little cooler, those with apricot (with crimson, golden or pink) a little browner, and those with mimosa (with golden or celery) a little brighter. In one pair, orange with mustard, both strands change — it becomes apricot with mimosa — so a single orange round on the body and on the sleeves, and the orange band near the top of the yoke, will look a little browner (our comparison). You can choose other shades in the colour picker.
Which size should I knit?
Three sizes — S, M and L — with a chest of 93, 101 and 110 cm, 55 to 59 cm from the hem to the underarm and sleeves of 46 to 50 cm, all measured from the fold line of the hem. It is a long jacket, shaped at the waist: by our calculation about 96 (104) 113 cm round the hem and 83 (92) 100 cm at the waist.
Will I have yarn left over?
The kit holds the amount for size L: 7 balls of Álafosslopi (100 g) — 5 of black, 1 of happy red and 1 of blue tweed — and 13 balls of Léttlopi (50 g): 2 each of lagoon heather and glacier blue, and 1 each of heaven blue heather, milkyway, violet heather, pink heather, crimson red, apricot, golden heather, mimosa and celery green heather — 20 balls in all. S uses 3 balls of black and M 4; everything else is the same for every size. There are so many balls because most pattern colours are knitted two strands at a time, and each of the eleven Léttlopi shades goes into one or more pairs. Expect some of most colours to be left over, more in the smaller sizes (our estimate). The pattern calls lagoon heather, heaven blue heather, violet heather, pink heather, crimson red, golden heather and celery green heather simply lagoon, heaven blue, violet, pink, crimson, golden and celery.
How are the two yarns used?
The ground — with the outer half of the folded hems, the neckband and the crochet borders — is one strand of Álafosslopi. Most pattern colours are two strands of Léttlopi held together and knitted as one: the chart key gives each colour as a pair of codes, for example lagoon with glacier blue (9423 + 1404) or heaven blue with lilac (1402 + 1413 — milkyway in place of the lilac in this kit). Two strands of Léttlopi are about as thick as one of Álafosslopi (our note). The hem facings on the inside are a single strand of Léttlopi, which keeps the folded edges thin. In this version two motif colours are single strands of Álafosslopi instead: the red and the blue — fire red and monet blue in the pattern, happy red and blue tweed in this kit.
How are the hems made?
Each hem starts with 5 rows (on the sleeves 5 rounds) of stocking stitch in a single strand of Léttlopi — violet heather on the body and crimson red on the sleeves — then, in Álafosslopi, a knit row, a fold line (a knit row from the wrong side on the body, a purl round on the sleeves) and 5 more rows before the chart starts. At the end the hems are folded to the inside along the fold line and slip-stitched down. The neckband is finished the same way, with a lagoon facing.
Do I have to cut my knitting?
Yes. The body is knitted in the round with a purl stitch at the beginning and end of each round, at the centre front. At the end you sew twice through each chain of purl stitches by machine with small straight stitches and cut carefully between the sewn rows.
How are the front borders made?
With a 6 mm crochet hook and the ground colour: 2 rows of single crochet up each front, worked loosely over the machine stitching and one stitch in, into every other row. In the second row of the right front you make 7 button loops of 4–5 chains, depending on the size of your buttons — the first at the neckline, the last just above the hem, the others evenly between. The crochet hook and the 7 buttons are not included; the pattern gives no button size.
Is anything unclear in the pattern?
A few small things. In size S the skip marks on the body chart leave 72 rounds, one more than the 71 in the text; knit the chart as marked — the difference is under 1 cm (our calculation). On the sleeve chart two labels read “skip rnd size S og M” — “og” is Icelandic for “and”. The gauge is given over stocking stitch, but the whole jacket is stranded colourwork with two kinds of yarn, so knit your gauge swatch in the pattern (our suggestion). The stitch holders for the underarms and the sewing machine for the steek are not in the materials list.
Which photo shows this version?
The first photo — the woman in front of the flowering shrubs, in the original colours (see above). The second photo shows the earth version in black heather with soft greys and browns; it is sold as a separate kit, with every colour as in the pattern. The coloured buttons are not included; the black top and the jeans are not part of the pattern.
What does the kit with needles include?
7 mm circular needles in 40 and 80 cm; a 6 mm (US 10) circular needle in 80 cm; a 5 mm (US 8) circular needle in 40 cm; 6 mm and 7 mm double-pointed needles — ADDI, as named in the pattern. The 6 mm crochet hook and the 7 buttons are not included.
