Good to know

Elding — your questions, answered

Which size should I knit?
Three sizes — S, M and L — with a chest of 92, 98 and 105 cm, and 58 to 61 cm long at the centre back. It is an open cardigan with no buttons or other fastening — the lace collar edges the fronts, and in the front photo (the pink version) the model holds them closed. The printed sleeve length, 68 (69) 71 cm, includes the raglan top up to the neck (our reading of the chart); to the underarm the sleeve is roughly 50 cm (our calculation).
Will I have yarn left over?
The kit holds the amount for L: 7 plates of white Plötulopi and 1 ball of white Léttlopi — the Léttlopi is only for sewing the pieces together. S and M use 6 plates.
How do I knit with two strands of Plötulopi?
Plötulopi is an unspun wool sold in flat plates. The pattern says to wind two strands softly together into one ball and knit them as one — it calls this “2-ply Plötulopi”.
Is the gauge important?
Yes — the pattern says so itself, because the lace runs over the whole cardigan: 12 stitches and 18 rows to 10 cm in stocking stitch on 6.5 mm needles, with two strands together. Knit a swatch and change needle size if you need to.
Which needle do I need for the collar?
The pattern asks for a 5.5 mm circular in 100 cm. We don’t stock that size in 100 cm, so the kit with needles has the 80 cm length. The collar has several hundred stitches — by our estimate about 340 to 370 after the increase row — so they will be crowded on 80 cm, but they can bunch up on the cable as you knit (our suggestion). If you have a 100 cm needle, use it.
Are there mistakes in the pattern?
A few small ones. On the back armhole, “Dec … 16 (17, 18) times up sleeve 15 (17, 17) sts” means decrease until 15 (17, 17) stitches remain (our reading — the stitch count confirms it). “Patt front from cart” means chart, and “the collar will become to supple” means too supple. On the sleeve charts, row 97 is printed as a second “96”. The number of stitches to pick up for the collar is not printed — pick up as the text says (3 stitches every 4 rows and 2 every 3 rows up the fronts, 1 in every stitch across the sleeves and back) and place the 7-stitch lace repeat so both ends match. The waist shaping and the sleeve-cap decreases are shown only in the charts.
How do I finish it?
The pattern says to rinse the cardigan by hand in lukewarm water, without fabric softener — it would make the collar too soft — then lay it flat to dry and smooth it gently into shape and to the measurements.
Which photo shows this colour?
The first photo — the white cardigan seen from the back, with the eyelet column and zigzag lace. The second photo shows the pink version from the front, where you can see how the collar ripples down the fronts; the pink one is sold as a separate kit.
What does the kit with needles include?
A 6.5 mm (US 10½) circular needle in 80 cm, used back and forth for all the pieces; a 5.5 mm (US 9) circular needle in 80 cm for the collar — ADDI, as named in the pattern. The pattern asks for the 5.5 mm in 100 cm; we don’t stock that length, so the kit has 80 cm (see above). No buttons or crochet hook are needed.
