Good to know

Elding — your questions, answered

Can I still buy the colours in the photos?
Yes, all four are still made by Ístex: Plötulopi white (0001) and Léttlopi white (0051) for the white version, Plötulopi 1425 and Léttlopi pink (1412) for the pink one. The pattern calls 1425 “berry”; our shop sells the same colour code as sunset rose heather, and calls 1412 pink heather — go by the colour numbers. The Léttlopi is only for sewing the pieces together.
Which size should I knit?
Three sizes — S, M and L — with a chest of 92, 98 and 105 cm and 58, 59 and 61 cm long at the centre back. By the stitch counts the back and both fronts come to about 92½, 99 and 106 cm round at the pattern’s gauge (our calculation), close to the printed chest, so the chest is the finished cardigan’s measurement all the way round. It is an open cardigan with no buttons or other fastening — the lace collar edges the fronts, and in the front photo (the pink version) the model holds them closed. The printed sleeve length, 68 (69, 71) cm, includes the raglan top up to the neck (our reading of the chart); to the underarm the sleeve is roughly 50 cm (our calculation).
How much yarn do I need?
Both versions take the same: 6 (6, 7) plates of Plötulopi, about 100 g each, knitted with two strands held together, and 1 ball (50 g) of Léttlopi — white (0051) or pink (1412) — only for sewing up.
How do I knit with two strands of Plötulopi?
Plötulopi is an unspun wool sold in flat plates. The pattern says to wind two strands softly together into one ball and knit them as one — it calls this “2-ply Plötulopi”.
Is the gauge important?
Yes — the pattern says so itself, because the lace runs over the whole cardigan: 12 stitches and 18 rows to 10 cm in stocking stitch on 6.5 mm needles, with two strands together. Knit a swatch and change needle size if you need to.
How is the collar knitted?
After the pieces are sewn together, stitches are picked up on the long 5.5 mm circular from the lower edge of the right front: 3 stitches every 4 rows and 2 every 3 rows up the front, 1 in every stitch across the sleeve tops and the back, and the left front like the right. After 2 garter ridges and a purl row, an increase row of K1, yo almost doubles the stitches, and the collar is knitted in the chart 1 lace border, then 3 garter rows and a bind-off from the wrong side. The pattern does not print the number of stitches; by our estimate it is about 170 to 190 picked up and about 340 to 370 after the increase row. Place the 7-stitch lace repeat so both ends look the same, as the pattern says.
Are there mistakes in the pattern?
A few small ones. On the back armhole, “Dec … 16 (17, 18) times up sleeve 15 (17, 17) sts” means decrease until 15 (17, 17) stitches remain (our reading — the stitch count confirms it). “Patt front from cart” means chart, and “the collar will become to supple” means too supple. On both sleeve charts, row 97 is printed as a second “96”. The number of stitches to pick up for the collar is not printed, and the waist shaping and the sleeve-cap decreases are shown only in the charts. The materials list also leaves out a tapestry needle.
How do I finish it?
The pattern says to rinse the cardigan by hand in lukewarm water, without fabric softener — it would make the collar too soft — then lay it flat to dry and smooth it gently into shape and to the measurements.
Is everything in the photos part of the pattern?
The cardigans are. In the pink photo, the black dress, the necklace and the ring are not; in the white photo, the jeans are not.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 4 pages: the cover photo (the pink version); a page with two small photos — pink from the front and white from the back — the materials for both versions, the sizes, gauge, the first instructions, the lace border chart with its key and the back chart; a page with the left sleeve chart, both front charts and the rest of the instructions, including the collar; and a page with the right sleeve chart and Ístex’s address.
