Él — your questions, answered

Which size should I knit?
Four sizes, to fit 8, 10, 12 and 14 years — a chest of 80, 85, 91 and 97 cm, 33 to 40 cm from hem to underarm and sleeves of 35 to 43 cm. Choose by the chest measurement.
Why does the size line in the pattern read “8 (10) 8 (12)”?
It is a misprint. The chart notes name the first three sizes 8, 10 and 12, and the largest size is not named anywhere in the pattern. We call it 14 years — the next step up, and the ages Védís Jónsdóttir gives another children’s sweater in the same Lopi book, with almost the same chest sizes. That label is our reading; the printed chest measurements — 80, 85, 91 and 97 cm — are what to go by.
Will I have yarn left over?
The kit holds the amount for the largest size: 5 plates of winter blue heather and 1 of white — 6 plates. Size 8 uses 3 plates of winter blue heather; sizes 10 and 12 use 4.
Why two strands of Plötulopi?
Plötulopi is unspun wool in 100 g plates. The pattern says to wind two strands of each colour together softly and knit them as one, which gives 14 stitches to 10 cm on 5.5 mm needles. The kit holds the plates the pattern lists; you wind the two strands from them.
Which child in the photo wears this version?
The child on the right, in the dark blue sweater with the white yoke. The girl on the left wears the purple version, also sold as a kit.
Which needles do I use for the neckband?
The 4.5 mm double-pointed needles — the 56 to 62 neck stitches are too few for the 60 cm circular. In the needle list, “og” is simply Icelandic for “and”.
What does the kit with needles include?
5.5 mm (US 9) circular needles in 40 and 60 cm; a 4.5 mm (US 7) circular needle in 60 cm; 4.5 mm and 5.5 mm double-pointed needles — ADDI, as named in the pattern. The pattern gives the longer circulars as 60–80 cm; the kit has the 60 cm length.
