Él — your questions, answered

Can I still buy the colours in the photo?
Three of the four are still made by Ístex: winter blue (1432) and white (0001) for the blue version, and midnight blue (0709) for the purple. Hyacinth (1429), the main colour of the purple version, is no longer made. Our purple kit uses 2026 amethyst in its place — about as light as the sweater in the photo, but a cooler, bluer purple than its mauve. Our shop calls 1432 winter blue heather, so go by the colour numbers.
The chart is printed in blue and white — how do I knit the purple version?
The key gives two codes for each square, blue first and purple second: the dark square is A — 1432 winter blue or 1429 hyacinth — and the white square is B — 0001 white or 0709 midnight blue. So for the purple sweater, knit the purple on the dark squares and midnight blue on the white ones; the yoke then comes out midnight blue on purple, as on the girl on the left in the photo.
Which size should I knit?
Four sizes, with a chest of 80, 85, 91 and 97 cm, 33, 35, 38 and 40 cm from the hem to the underarm, and sleeves of 35, 38, 41 and 43 cm to the underarm. The body is 112 to 136 stitches all the way up, which comes to 80 to 97 cm at the pattern’s gauge (our check), so the chest is the finished sweater’s measurement all the way round — choose by that. The size line in the pattern is misprinted “8 (10) 8 (12) yrs”: the chart notes name the first three sizes 8, 10 and 12, and the largest size is not named correctly anywhere. We call it 14 years: B&G, Védís Jónsdóttir’s children’s zip hoodie in the same book, has sizes 8, 10, 12 and 14 years with almost the same chests, 80 to 98 cm (our reading).
How much yarn do I need?
Plötulopi in plates of about 100 g. Both versions take the same: A 3 (4, 4, 5) plates and B 1 plate in every size — 4 (5, 5, 6) plates. Blue: A winter blue (1432), B white (0001). Purple: A hyacinth (1429), B midnight blue (0709). The pattern says to wind two strands of each colour softly together and knit them as one.
Is anything unclear in the pattern?
A few small things. The size line is misprinted (see above). The needle list says “4½ mm (US 7) og 5½ mm (US 9) double pointed needles” — “og” is Icelandic for “and”. The neckband says only “Change to 4½ mm needles”; its 56 to 62 stitches are too few for the 60–80 cm circular, so use the 4.5 mm double-pointed needles (our reading). And the materials list leaves out stitch holders (or scrap yarn) for the underarm stitches and a tapestry needle for grafting them.
Is everything in the photo part of the pattern?
The two sweaters are — the purple version on the girl on the left, the blue version on the child on the right. Their jeans are not.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 4 pages: the cover photo, one page with the materials for both versions, the sizes, gauge, all the instructions and the yoke chart with its key, a page with the finishing and the designer’s name, and Ístex’s back cover.
