Drama is Védís Jónsdóttir’s long open coat for women from Ístex’s Lopi 27, knitted in Álafosslopi in the round and cut open at the front afterwards. It is shaped in at the waist; the cuffs and the tall collar are ruffled by dropping stitches on purpose, and the purl stitches on each side of the front opening are unravelled into a long fringe down both fronts. The pattern has two one-colour versions with the same amounts — a yellow coat in golden (9964) and a black coat in black (0059) — in sizes S, M and L. Both colours are still made.

Needles
6 mm (US 10) circular needles, 40 and 80 cm — the pattern changes to the shorter one as the yoke narrows
4.5 mm (US 7) circular needle, 40 cm, for the first 3 cm of the collar
6 mm (US 10) double-pointed needles for the sleeves
You will also need
A 1 m cord for the neckline and stitch markers (both in the pattern’s list); stitch holders for the underarm stitches; a tapestry needle for grafting the underarms; and a sewing machine with matching thread to sew the front before it is cut.
How it is knitted
Knitted in the round from the lower edge up and cut open at the front afterwards. The body is cast on with 133 (145, 153) stitches on 6 mm; the first 3 and last 3 stitches of the round are purled all the way up — later they are unravelled into the fringe. After 3 cm of twisted rib (k1 tbl, p1 — each knit stitch knitted through the back loop), a 7-stitch panel at the centre back (p2, k3, p2) starts with an eyelet round. The body is decreased at both sides at 10, 20, 30, 40, 45 and 50 cm, to 109 (121, 129) stitches at the waist, then increased three times, 5 cm apart, to 121 (133, 141) and knitted to 66 (68, 70) cm. The sleeves start with 9 cm of k1 tbl, p2 rib; then one purl stitch of each pair is dropped and unravelled down to the cast-on, which makes the “cobweb ruffle” cuff. They are increased to 40 (44, 46) stitches and knitted to 46 (48, 50) cm. Body and sleeves are joined for a round yoke of 169 (181, 193) stitches, decreased from a 36-round chart to 62 (66, 70); the smaller sizes skip marked rounds, and on the last round the centre-back stitch is dropped and run down to the rib. The collar is 3 cm of twisted rib on 4.5 mm, an increase round, then k1 tbl, p2 rib on 6 mm to 9 (10, 10) cm; one purl stitch of each pair is dropped and unravelled to ruffle it, and it is bound off loosely. Last, the underarms are grafted, the purl stitches up the front are machine-sewn twice on each side, the coat is cut between the seams and the purl stitches are unravelled into the fringe. A 1 m cord is drawn through the neckline.

Why you'll love it
- Fringed frontsThe front is machine-sewn and cut open, and the 3 purl stitches on each side are unravelled — the loose strands become a fringe down both edges.
- Cobweb rufflesThe cuffs and the tall collar are knitted as rib, then one purl stitch of each pair is dropped and unravelled, so the rib opens out into a ruffle.
- Long and shaped66 to 70 cm from hem to underarm, decreased in at the waist and increased again towards the chest.
- A ladder up the backA narrow panel of purl and knit stitches runs up the centre back; on the last yoke round its middle stitch is dropped down to the rib.
- Two looksWarm golden yellow or plain black — the same stitches and the same amounts.
