The eight leave rose pattern, or Selburose, Selbu pattern, is a traditional Icelandic knitwear and has long been common in Icelandic needlework and this classic design is based on an ancient pattern that has a resemblance to a frosted rose. Will it fit me?

It comes in one size for men and women. It is a knitted band, so it stretches round the head rather than coming in sizes, and at about 11 cm wide it sits over the ears and the forehead together, which is where the cold gets in.

What is the eight-petalled rose?

An eight-pointed star that reads as a rose or a frost flower, and the pattern Varma counts among its oldest. On this band the roses run in a row, white on black, each framed by a diamond with a dotted border above and below.

How does it feel?

Soft and close. The band is a fine wool knit that follows the head without bulk, and the roses are knitted in rather than stitched on, so there is nothing to catch on the inside. It is light enough to forget until you come indoors.

Is there a hat to go with it?

How do I wash it?
