The eight leave rose pattern, or Selburose, Selbu pattern, is a traditional Icelandic knitwear and has long been common in Icelandic needlework and this classic design is based on an ancient pattern that has a resemblance to a frosted rose. Will it fit me?

It is one size for men and women. A knitted band has no sizes to choose between: it stretches round the head and settles back, and at about 11 cm wide it covers the ears and the forehead at once.

What is the eight-petalled rose?

The eight-pointed star that Icelanders read as a rose, and the pattern Varma counts among its oldest. On this band the roses run in a row in dark grey on white, each inside a diamond, with a dotted edge top and bottom.

How does it feel?

Close and soft. The band is a fine wool knit that sits against the head without bulk, and the roses are knitted in rather than sewn on, so the inside is smooth. It is light enough to forget until you come indoors.

Is there a hat or gloves to match?

Yes. Varma knits the same roses in dark grey on white on a beanie with a folded brim and on women's five-finger gloves, and we sell both. The whole set is also made in black with white roses.

How do I keep it white?

Wash it only when it needs it: an airing is usually enough for wool. When it does, hand wash in cool water with wool detergent or use a 30 °C wool programme, press the water out, pull it back into shape and dry it flat, away from direct heat.
