Good to know

Bjalla — your questions, answered

Why is one colour different from the pattern?
Lilac (1413) is no longer made by Ístex. This kit has milkyway (1702) in its place — knit it wherever the pattern says B: most of the cuff, the wrist, the hand and the thumb. Milkyway is a paler lavender than the lilac in the photo, and because it is the main colour, your mittens will look lighter than the ones in the photo. You can choose another shade in the colour picker.
Which size should I knit?
Three sizes, to fit 2, 4 and 6 years. The pattern gives no gauge or measurements — the hand has 22, 24 or 28 stitches on 4 mm needles — so try the mitten on the child as you go. You can lengthen or shorten the hand by knitting a few rounds more or fewer before the top decreases.
Will I have yarn left over?
Yes, in every size. The pattern asks for the same yarn for all three sizes — 1 ball of garnet red and 2 of milkyway, 3 balls for a pair — so the smaller sizes leave more over.
What is brioche stitch?
A deep, soft rib made with yarn-overs and slipped stitches. Here it is knitted flat: on the first row you work *k1, yo, slip 1 purlwise*; on every row after that you work *k1 (the slipped stitch together with its yarn-over), yo, slip the next stitch purlwise*. The pattern adds “1 row = work back and forth”. Our reading: each row it counts is one pass out and one pass back, so the 4 garnet red rows are 8 passes and the 16 milkyway rows are 32 — the length of the cuff in the photo fits this reading. Counted as single passes, the cuff comes out about half as long. The cuff is sewn together at the end.
Are there mistakes in the pattern?
Three small ones. The thumb decrease is printed “k1, p2tog” — the thumb is otherwise all knit, so it is most likely meant to be k1, k2tog. In the left mitten, ignore the stray “L” in “work until 5 (5) 5 L sts rem on 2nd needle”. And in size 2 the 22 stitches split 11 and 11 between the two needle pairs, so the top goes 22, 18, 14, 10, 6 and cannot end on exactly 4 — stop at 6, or decrease only twice on the last round, then draw the yarn through.
What does the kit with needles include?
3.5 mm (US 4) and 4 mm (US 6) double-pointed needles — ADDI, as named in the pattern. Scrap yarn for the thumb is not included.
