Good to know

Bjalla — your questions, answered

Can I still buy the colours in the photo?
Garnet red (1409), the edge at the top of the cuff, is still made by Ístex. Lilac (1413), the main colour — most of the cuff, the wrist, the hand and the thumb — is no longer made. Our kit uses milkyway (1702) in its place, a paler lavender, so mittens knitted in it look lighter than the ones in the photo.
Which size should I knit?
Three sizes, to fit 2, 4 and 6 years. The pattern gives no gauge and no measurements — the cuff is cast on with 32, 32 or 34 stitches and the hand has 22, 24 or 28 stitches on 4 mm needles — so try the mitten on the child as you go. You can lengthen or shorten the hand by knitting a few rounds more or fewer before the top decreases (our suggestion).
How much yarn do I need?
Léttlopi in 50 g balls, the same in every size: 1 ball of garnet red (A) and 2 of lilac (B) — 3 balls for a pair.
What is brioche stitch?
A deep, soft rib made with yarn-overs and slipped stitches. Here it is knitted flat: on the first row you work *k1, yo, slip 1 purlwise*; on every row after that you work *k1 (the slipped stitch together with its yarn-over), yo, slip the next stitch purlwise*. The pattern adds “1 row = work back and forth”. Our reading: each row it counts is one pass out and one pass back, so the 4 garnet red rows are 8 passes and the 16 lilac rows are 32 — the length of the cuff in the photo fits this reading. Counted as single passes, the cuff comes out about half as long. The cuff is sewn together at the end.
Are there mistakes in the pattern?
Three small ones. The thumb decrease is printed “k1, p2tog” — the thumb is otherwise all knit, so it is most likely meant to be k1, k2tog (our reading). In the left mitten, ignore the stray “L” in “work until 5 (5) 5 L sts rem on 2nd needle”. And in size 2 the 22 stitches split 11 and 11 between the two needle pairs, so the top goes 22, 18, 14, 10, 6 and cannot end on exactly 4 — stop at 6, or decrease only twice on the last round, then draw the yarn through.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 4 pages: the cover photo, one page with the materials, sizes and all the instructions for the right and the left mitten, a blank page and Ístex’s back cover.
