Why you'll love it

  • Two strands, two redsEvery stitch of the coat is one strand of raspberry heather and one of ruby red heather held together, on 12 mm needles.
  • Pockets with liningsThe pocket openings are knitted in with waste yarn; later the lower stitches get a moss-stitch edge and the upper stitches an 18 cm lining, sewn inside.
  • Moss-stitch bordersThe hem, the front borders, the 10 cm cuffs and the 22 cm collar are all moss stitch.
  • A beret to matchHödd starts with a rib in both colours held together and is finished in raspberry heather alone.

Good to know

Ylja & Hödd — your questions, answered

Can I still buy the colours in the photo?
Not both. Álafosslopi raspberry heather (9970) is no longer made by Ístex; our Ylja kit uses 1242, which our shop calls oxblood red, in its place. Ruby red heather (9962) is still made. In the coat the two are held together in every stitch; in the beret raspberry heather is also the colour of the crown.
Which size should I knit?
The coat comes in sizes 36, 38, 40 and 42, with a printed chest of 95, 100, 105 and 110 cm all the way round. By our check the body’s stitches at the underarm, at the pattern’s gauge, come to about 6 cm more than that in every size, counting the moss-stitch front borders. The body is 66 (67, 68, 69) cm to the underarm — printed “or desired lenght”, so the length is yours to choose — and 90 to 96 cm to the shoulder, with sleeves of 48 (49, 50, 50) cm. The beret is one size, printed “Ladies size 36-42”. Compare with a coat that fits well before you choose.
How much yarn do I need?
Álafosslopi in 100 g balls. The coat: raspberry heather 7 (8, 8, 9) and ruby red heather 7 (8, 8, 9) — 14 (16, 16, 18) balls in all. The beret has its own list: 1 ball of each.
How does the coat close?
With three buttons and three loops. The loops are crochet chains of two strands of Álafosslopi, about 5 cm long or big enough for the button, folded and fastened to the left front edge — the lowest level with the pocket lining, the top one where the collar begins and the third between them. The buttons go on the right front. The pattern gives no button size, and buttons are not included.
Is anything unclear in the pattern?
A few things. Where the pattern says “repeat … more times”, the printed stitch counts work out only if the first time is counted in — for the sleeve increases and for the first yoke decreases (our check). In sizes 40 and 42 the yoke join asks for 4 more body stitches than the body has after the armholes, and the printed yoke counts keep those 4 stitches: after the last yoke decreases one more “Dec A” on the printed 49 leaves 45, not the 41 printed. Counted from the stitches the body actually has, the same decreases end at 41 (our check). The two pocket openings sit 11 stitches from the front edges only in size 36; in the larger sizes the first one is 1 to 3 stitches further in. Neither list includes the buttons or a crochet hook.
Is everything in the photos part of the pattern?
The coat and the beret are; the buttons are not included. The dark patterned dress under the coat is not part of the pattern.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 4 pages: the cover photo of the coat and beret; a page with a small photo of the coat, the coat’s sizes, materials, gauge, notes and instructions; a page with the end of the finishing, a photo of the beret and the beret’s materials, size and instructions; and Ístex’s back cover.
