Ýlir is named after the second month of winter in the old Icelandic calendar. Védís Jónsdóttir’s design from Ístex’s Lopi 44 is a dark grey Álafosslopi sweater with a black and light grey tweed yoke, a collar, and a neck opening closed with snap fasteners.

How it is knitted
Body and sleeves are knitted in the round from the lower edge up to the underarms, then joined and the yoke is knitted in the round from charts. The neck opening at the front is knitted over a steek that is machine-stitched and cut open; a ribbed band and a collar finish it.

Ýlir — your questions, answered

Do I have to cut my knitting?

Yes — only at the neck. The yoke is knitted in the round with a few purl stitches at centre front (a steek). You machine-stitch along them twice and cut between the rows of stitching; the pattern takes you through it step by step, then the bands and collar cover the edges.

What closes the neck opening?

Four snap fasteners, sewn to the bands and neckline as the pattern describes. They are not in the kit.

Which size should I knit?

Compare the chest measurement in the size table with a sweater that fits you: S 92, M 101, L/XL 111, 2XL 120, 3XL 129 cm all round. L and XL share one size in this pattern.

Will I have yarn left over?

The kit holds the amount for 3XL: 5 balls of dark grey, 2 of black tweed and one each of light grey tweed and ash. Sizes S to L/XL use 4 balls of dark grey, so one ball of dark grey is left over.

What does the kit with needles include?
