Good to know

Vegur — your questions, answered

How much yarn do I need?
The pattern lists the four colours but no amounts. By our count from the stitches — 200 stitches by 38 rows — black heather (16 rows, plus the cast-off) uses about three quarters of a 50 g ball, and rust, stone blue and ash less than half a ball each. So one ball of each colour should do; a second ball of black is a margin if you knit loosely. Our kit has one ball of each colour and two of black.
How is it knitted?
Lengthwise, back and forth on a long circular needle. You cast on 200 stitches with a crochet hook — the pattern explains the method in four steps — then knit 38 rows of garter stitch in six stripes and cast off loosely. Every stripe has an even number of rows, so all the colour changes fall on the same side (our reading).
The pattern says “ash heather” — which yarn is that?
Go by the colour number: 0054, called Light Ash Heather in our shop. Our Ash Heather is 0056, a different grey. 0054 is the pale stripe in the photo.
Can I still buy the colours in the photo?
Yes — all four are still made by Ístex: rust heather (9427), black heather (0005), stone blue heather (9418) and ash heather (0054).
Is anything unclear in the pattern?
The gauge. It is printed as 15.5 stitches and 18 rows to 10 cm in garter stitch. The stitches match the length: 200 stitches make about 129 cm. Read as rows, the 38 rows would make the scarf about 21 cm wide, not 11 cm; it only adds up if the 18 means garter ridges of 2 rows each, which gives about 10.6 cm (our calculation). The materials also say “circular needles”, but the scarf is knitted on one.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 4 pages: the cover photo, one page with the materials, the size, the gauge, the cast-on steps and the instructions, a blank page and Ístex’s back cover.
