Tryggð — loyalty: “those who get to know the airiness and the warmth of the Lopapeysa stay loyal,” says the pattern. Védís Jónsdóttir’s round-yoke baby cardigan from Ístex’s Lopi 42 is knitted with a single strand of Plötulopi in gulf stream, with a yoke pattern in ivory beige and seed-stitch edges instead of rib — at the cuffs, the hem, the neck and down both front bands. The body and the yoke are knitted back and forth, so there is no cutting. Four baby sizes, 74 to 92 cm.

Needles
4 mm (US 6) circular needle, 60 cm, for the body and the yoke

3.5 mm and 4 mm double-pointed needles for the sleeves
You will also need
Five buttons (in the pattern’s list, no size given), plus stitch holders for the underarm stitches, 2 stitch markers and a tapestry needle for grafting the underarms, which the pattern uses but does not list.
How it is knitted
The sleeves are knitted in the round on double-pointed needles: 5 rounds of seed stitch on 3.5 mm, then stocking stitch on 4 mm, increased 7 times at the underarm from 28 (30, 32, 34) to 42 (44, 46, 48) stitches. The body is knitted back and forth on the circular needle from 5 rows of seed stitch, with 2 stitches decreased at each side, twice, on the way up — from 115 (123, 131, 139) to 107 (115, 123, 131) stitches. Body and sleeves are joined, with 7 (8, 9, 10) stitches left on holders at each underarm, and the yoke — 163 (171, 179, 187) stitches — is knitted back and forth in stocking stitch from a 32-round chart with five decrease rounds, down to 63 (66, 69, 72); the smaller sizes leave out marked rounds. The neckband is decreased to 51 (53, 55, 57) stitches on 3.5 mm and knitted in seed stitch for 5 rows. The underarms are grafted, and the front bands are picked up — 3 stitches for every 4 rows — and knitted in seed stitch for 5 rows, with five buttonholes (a yarn over and k2tog) in the left band.
