Why you'll love it

  • All ribK2, P2 rib from the cast-on to the cast-off, in one colour — no charts.
  • One rectangleTwo slits for the arms turn one rib rectangle into a wrap with a wide shawl collar and long front points.
  • Matching endsA crochet cast-on that looks like a cast-off edge, so both ends of the rectangle look alike.
  • Button trimThe pattern uses 36 mother-of-pearl buttons (not included) as decoration along the lower edges and up the sleeves — there are no buttonholes.

Good to know

Þel — your questions, answered

Can I still buy the colours in the photos?
The light brown, oatmeal (0085), yes — it is still made by Ístex; our shop calls it oatmeal heather. The dark brown, hazel (1401), is no longer made. Our dark brown kit uses 0867 chocolate heather in its place — also a dark brown heather, a little darker and less red than the hazel in the photo.
What size is it?
One size, for sizes 36 to 44. It is 60 cm long at the centre back, with sleeves of 50 cm. The pattern gives no chest measurement. By our calculation the body rectangle is about 66 cm wide (172 stitches at the gauge) and 144 cm long (the 50 + 44 + 50 cm the pattern says to knit).
How much yarn do I need?
17 balls of Léttlopi (50 g) for either version — hazel (1401) for the dark brown, oatmeal (0085) for the light brown. There is one size and one amount.
How is it shaped?
The body is one rectangle with two slits for the arms; the sleeves are knitted in the round and sewn into the slits. In the photos the rectangle folds into a wide collar and the ends hang at the front in long points. The pattern has no diagram, so look at the photos as you go. Start the second slit on a row from the same side of the work as the first, so the 62 stitches are counted from the same edge and the two slits line up (our suggestion).
Does it have buttons to close it?
No — it is an open wrap with no fastening, although the pattern calls it a “sweater”. The 36 buttons are only decoration: 15 along each lower edge and 3 up each sleeve. In the photos they can be seen on the light brown one.
What else do I need?
The pattern lists 4.5 mm (US 7) circular needles in 40 and 80 cm, 4.5 mm double-pointed needles and the 36 buttons, with no button size. The cast-on is worked with a crochet hook, which the list leaves out and gives no size for, and you need needle and thread for the buttons.
Is anything unclear in the pattern?
The sleeves are cast on with 62 stitches, which is not a multiple of 4, so the K2, P2 rib does not meet evenly where the round starts; put the start of the round under the arm, where the increases go (our suggestion). The tension line says “4½ needles” — it means 4.5 mm.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 4 pages: the cover photo of the dark brown version, a page with the materials, size, tension, the crochet cast-on, all the instructions and a small photo of the light brown version, a full-page photo of the light brown version, and Ístex’s back cover.
