Þari — kelp. Guðrún Ragna Sigurjónsdóttir’s cushion cover from Ístex’s Lopi 30, in Álafosslopi: a front of interlocking cables that looks woven, a plain moss-stitch back, a zip in the top edge and a braided cord round the edges. Both pieces are knitted flat, in one colour, for a 40 × 40 cm cushion insert. The pattern’s only colour, fairy green (9984) — a pale greenish oat in the photo — is no longer made.
What you get
- The knitting pattern in English (PDF), emailed right after purchase — nothing is posted
- One size, for a 40 × 40 cm cushion insert
- The cable chart for the front
- Yarn and needles are not included. The kit has this pattern and all the yarn: the cushion kit
Yarn used in the pattern (not included)
Álafosslopi — 100 g balls · one size
A 9984 fairy green — 3 · no longer made — the kit uses 9973 wheat heather, a light beige without the green; no Álafosslopi made today has the pale greenish oat in the photo
Size
One size, for a 40 × 40 cm (15¾″ square) cushion insert. The two pieces are knitted to 37 cm and smoothed to 37 × 37 cm (14½″ square) as they dry, so the cover is a little smaller than the insert.
Gauge
Cable pattern: 18 sts = 10 cm (4″) on 6.5 mm needles. Moss stitch: 11½ sts = 10 cm (4″). The pattern gives no row gauge.
Needles
6.5 mm (US 10½) needles, used back and forth — the pattern says “long needles or circular needles” and gives no length
You will also need
A 30 cm zip and a 40 × 40 cm cushion insert (both in the pattern’s list); a cable needle, sewing thread in a matching colour for the zip and the braid, and a tapestry needle for the seams, which the list leaves out.
How it is knitted
Two pieces, knitted back and forth on 6.5 mm needles. The front is 65 stitches of cables from an 8-row chart: a row of 6-stitch cables (3 over 3) is crossed one way, and four rows later the next row of cables is crossed the other way, shifted by 3 stitches — so the whole front looks woven. The back is 41 stitches of moss stitch. Both pieces are knitted to 37 cm, rinsed, and smoothed to 37 × 37 cm to dry. They are sewn together on the right side at the sides and bottom, a 30 cm zip goes in the middle of the top edge, and a braided cord is sewn on over the edges all the way round, starting and ending at the zip.
