  • A higher back neckGerman short rows raise the back of the neck about 2.5 cm for a better fit, before the rolled neckband is knitted.

Good to know

Skjaldmær — your questions, answered

Which size should I knit?
The ten sizes are named by the finished bust: 83, 90, 97, 104, 111, 118, 125, 132, 139 and 146 cm (32¾–57½″). The sweater is about 60–73 cm long at centre back and the sleeves 45–51 cm. You can knit the body or sleeves longer or shorter; the pattern reminds you that this changes the yarn needed.
Is this the colourway in the pattern?
The pattern is written for frost grey with rubarb, lily white, mustard yellow and misty rose, and lists three colour alternatives. This kit is its grey/green alternative — 3054 frost grey, 3031 moss, 3051 lily white, 3032 rockweed and 3024 glacier sand — the green sweater on the pattern cover.
Will I have yarn left over?
The kit holds the amount for the largest size, 146 cm: 12 balls of frost grey, 4 of moss, 3 of lily white and 2 each of rockweed and glacier sand. The smallest size, 83 cm, uses 5 frost grey, 2 moss and 1 of each of the other three colours.
Why does the designer ask for a colourwork swatch?
The yoke height depends on your round gauge. At 26 rounds to 10 cm it comes out as intended; if your colourwork is much tighter, the yoke gets shallower, and she suggests adding a few plain rounds at the start of the yoke or one extra round around the flower border.
Why might the sweater twist?
Fjallalopi is a single-strand yarn, so knitting in the round can make the fabric twist a little. The pattern asks you to wash the sweater when finished, stretch and ease body and sleeves into the right shape, and dry it flat.
What does the kit with needles include?
ADDI needles in the sizes the pattern names: 3.5 mm (US 4) and 3 mm (US 2½) circular needles, each in 40 and 80 cm, and 3 mm and 3.5 mm double-pointed needles.
