Knitting needles & notions

Circular needles 3.5 mm (60 cm) and 4.5 mm (60 cm).
Stitch markers, stitch holders, and a darning needle may also be needed. Please note that these items are not included in our kits, so make sure you have them on hand or purchase them separately before you begin.

Gauge

18 sts × 23 rows in stockinette stitch = 10 × 10 cm.

Construction

Body and sleeves are worked in the round from the lower edge to the underarms, then joined to knit the yoke in the round. Short rows shape the back; the neckband is finished in ribbing, and the beaks are embroidered afterward.

Which size should I knit?

The pattern has five sizes, for ages 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10, with a finished chest of 64, 69, 73, 78 and 87 cm (25 to 34″). It is planned with 3 to 6 cm of ease, so compare with the child's chest measurement.

How are the puffins' beaks made?

The pattern tells you to ignore the orange stitches in the yoke chart while knitting. When the sweater is finished, you embroider the beaks with apricot and a yarn needle — the designer says this is better than knitting them.

Will I have yarn left over?

The kit holds the amount for age 10: 6 balls of lagoon, 2 of glacier blue and 1 each of bottle green, white, galaxy and apricot. Age 2 uses 3 lagoon and 1 glacier blue, age 4 uses 4 and 1, age 6 uses 4 and 2, and age 8 uses 5 and 2. The beaks need only 5 to 15 metres of apricot.

How do I knit the small rounds of the sleeves?

The designer recommends the magic loop method for the sleeves, which avoids bunching when you increase and work the pattern. As the yoke gets smaller, the pattern says to change to a shorter circular needle when needed; the needles in the kit are 60 cm.

What does the kit with needles include?

A 3.5 mm (US 4) and a 4.5 mm (US 7) circular needle, both 60 cm — ADDI, the two sizes the pattern names. Stitch markers, stitch holders and a darning needle are not included.
