Two young women by a railing in front of a red-roofed building, wearing Öld in the pattern’s two versions — left, the black cardigan with light beige and acorn zigzags, white crosses and a white neck; right, the garnet red one with black and pine green zigzags and white crosses; both with small buttons and white lace cuffs folded back. The black tops under the cardigans and the black trousers are not part of the pattern; the LOPI logo is printed in the corner

Why you'll love it

  • Lace cuffs that fold backEach sleeve starts with 15 rounds of white eyelet lace; then the sleeve is turned and knitted from the other side, and in the photos the lace cuff is folded back over the sleeve.
  • Zigzags and crossesThe yoke chart has two zigzag bands in the second and third colours around a band of small white crosses, and ends in white at the neck.
  • Shaped at the waistTwelve stitches are taken in at the sides and added back before the chest; the body is short, 31 to 35 cm from the hem to the underarm.
  • Crocheted bandsThe front is cut open and edged with single crochet; seven small chain loops on the right band close it with buttons.

Good to know

Öld — your questions, answered

Can I still buy the colours in the photos?
Yes. All six are still made by Ístex: Léttlopi black (0059), light beige (0086), acorn (0053) and white (0051) for the black cardigan, and garnet red (1409), black (0059), pine green (1407) and white (0051) for the red. Our shop calls 0086 light beige heather, 0053 acorn heather and 1407 pine green heather, so go by the colour numbers.
Which size should I knit?
Five sizes, XS to XL, with a chest of 83, 88, 92, 97 and 101 cm all the way round. By our check that is the body’s stitches without the two steek stitches, at the pattern’s gauge, to within 1 cm. The body is short — 31 to 35 cm from the hem to the underarm — and about 7 cm narrower round the waist (our calculation from the 12 stitches taken in). The sleeves are 47 to 51 cm, measured from the cast-on edge, so the length includes the lace cuff that folds back (our reading). Compare with a cardigan that fits well before you choose.
How much yarn do I need?
Léttlopi in 50 g balls, the same for both versions: A 7 (7, 8, 8, 9), B 1, C 1 and D 2 in every size — 11 (11, 12, 12, 13) balls in all. D, white, is the lace cuffs, the small crosses, the top of the yoke and, by our reading, the neckband.
How are the lace cuffs made?
Each sleeve is cast on loosely with 48 stitches in white on double-pointed needles. The cuff chart is 15 rounds: an eyelet round (knit 2 together, yarn over), then columns of yarn-over lace, decreased to 42 stitches in round 9. Then you turn the sleeve and knit on from the wrong side, wrapping a stitch so no hole forms; by our reading that is so the lace shows its right side when it is folded back, as in the photos.
How is the front opened and closed?
The cardigan is knitted in the round with two purled stitches at the centre front. At the end you machine-stitch with small straight stitches twice into each column of purl stitches and cut between them. Each front edge then gets two rows of single crochet in A with a 3½ mm hook; on the right front, seven 3-chain loops for the buttons — the first at the top of the yoke, the last above the garter edge, the others evenly between.
Is anything unclear in the pattern?
A few small things. The yoke chart labels its last round “59 (63) 65 (67) 69 sts”, but the text — and our count — give 59 (61, 63, 65, 67). The colour of the neckband is not named; the chart ends in white and the photo shows a white neckband. In the lace cuff, round 9 is written “*K1, K2 tog, K6*”, a 9-stitch repeat, but the cuff chart repeats over 8 stitches and shows knit 1, knit 2 together, knit 5 (our reading), which is what gives the printed 42 stitches. The list leaves out stitch markers, stitch holders, a sewing machine for the steek and a tapestry needle.
Is everything in the photos part of the pattern?
The two cardigans are. The black tops under them and the black trousers are not.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 4 pages: the cover photo of both cardigans; a page with a small photo, the sizes, materials, gauge, notes and all the instructions; a page with the three charts and the colour key; and Ístex’s back cover.
