Good to know

Odin Lopapeysa — your questions, answered

Which size should I knit?
Fifteen sizes: women’s XS to 5XL, chest 87 to 156 cm, and men’s S to 3XL, chest 89 to 127–132 cm. The pattern plans 5 to 13 cm of ease. Women’s XS and S use the same stitch counts, so they come out the same width although the size table gives XS an 87 cm chest and S 89 cm; XS has shorter sleeves and two fewer yoke rounds. For women’s 4XL and 5XL the table gives 145 and 156 cm, but their 272 and 288 cast-on stitches come to about 151 and 160 cm at the pattern’s gauge (our calculation).
Will I have yarn left over?
The kit holds the amount for women’s 5XL, the largest size: 16 balls of black, 4 of ash heather and 4 of dark grey heather — 24 balls. Women’s XS uses 8, women’s L and XL 12, men’s 3XL 19.
Are the lengths in the size table the ones I knit to?
Not quite — the pattern gives them twice. The knitting instructions say to knit the body to 38–45.5 cm (women) or 41–49 cm (men) from the cast-on edge, and the sleeves 1 to 3 cm longer than the table in most sizes. Measure against a sweater that fits you and knit to the length you want.
Are there misprints?
One in the knitting instructions: for men’s S the neckband round says to decrease 16 stitches, but the yoke ends with 96 stitches and the neckband needs 74 — decrease 22.
The chart is printed in blue — how do I knit the grey version?
The pattern names the black and grey colours in one line — 0059 Black (or 0005 Black Heather), 0056 Ash and 0058 Dark Grey — but doesn’t say which colour takes which place in the chart. We read them in the same order as the blue colours: black for Lapis blue, ash for white and dark grey for black heather, which matches the black sweater in the photos. The yarn table is written for the blue version only; the stitches are the same, so we packed the same amounts.
Is this the Odin sweater sold ready-made in the shop?
No — that hand-knitted Odin sweater is a different design. This kit is Olga Begak’s Odin Lopapeysa.
What does the kit with needles include?
3.5 mm (US 4) and 4.5 mm (US 7) circular needles in 80 cm — the pattern names circular needles in these two sizes without lengths, and recommends the magic-loop method for the sleeves — ADDI. Stitch markers, stitch holders and a darning needle are not included.
