Good to know

Mishka Lopapeysa — your questions, answered

Which size should I knit?
Twelve sizes: women’s XS to 2XL and men’s XS to 2XL, with a chest of 80 to 126 cm in the size table (82 and 90 cm for men’s XS and S). Men’s sizes use the same stitch counts as the women’s, with a body 2.5 cm longer and sleeves 3 cm longer. The pattern plans 5 to 13 cm of ease.
Do the chest measurements match the gauge?
Not quite. The pattern’s gauge is 17 stitches to 10 cm, and at that gauge the body cast-on gives a chest of about 85 to 129 cm — 3 to 8 cm more than the size table says (our calculation). Knit a swatch and choose your size from the cast-on if you want to be sure.
Will I have yarn left over?
The kit holds the amount for the 2XL sizes: 9 balls of Rough Sea and 4 of light beige heather — 13 balls. Women’s XS and S and men’s XS use 8.
Are there misprints?
Two in the stitch counts. For 2XL the sleeve is printed as 62 stitches after the underarm stitches go on a holder; it should be 58 (76 − 18), which gives the yoke total of 300. And the chart prints six stitch totals, 220/240/260/280/300/320, though sizes M and L both start the yoke with 260 — so L, XL and 2XL follow the 260, 280 and 300 figures. Separately, by our calculation the chart’s optional start marks for centring the motif are printed one size up for the men’s sizes; men can use the women’s mark for their size.
Which size is the sweater in the photos?
Women’s S, according to the pattern.
What does the kit with needles include?
A 4.5 mm (US 7) circular needle in 80 cm — the pattern names only a 4.5 mm circular needle, without a length, and recommends the magic-loop method for the sleeves — ADDI. Stitch markers, stitch holders and a darning needle are not included.
