Good to know

Lopi 18 No. 9 & 10 — your questions, answered

What are No. 9 and No. 10?
Two colour versions of one sweater by Anna Árnadóttir, printed together in one leaflet from Ístex’s Lopi 18. They share the charts, sizes, needles and stitch counts; the colours, the rib at the hem and cuffs and the neckband differ, and each design has its own key for the charts. Design 9 — on the cover, marked 9 — is black heather with light gray and white, with plain light gray rib. Design 10 — in the small photo on page 2, marked 10 — is pond heather with light forest heather and midnight blue, with striped rib and a striped neckband. Our Herðubreið kit is for Design 9; there is no kit for Design 10.
Can I still buy the colours in the photo?
For Design 9, yes: black heather (0005), light gray (0056) and white (0051) are all still made by Ístex — our shop calls 0056 ash heather, so go by the number. For Design 10, only midnight blue (0709) is still made; pond heather (9736) and light forest heather (0013) are no longer made. The leaflet prints the colour names next to the numbers.
Which size should I knit?
Five sizes, XS to XL, with a chest of 102, 106, 111, 115 and 120 cm and a length of 62, 65, 68, 70 and 72 cm to the centre front neck. Sleeves are 41, 43, 43, 45 and 45 cm for women and 46, 48, 48, 50 and 50 cm for men. The body’s 132 to 156 stitches come to the printed chest at the pattern’s gauge (our check), so the chest is the finished sweater’s measurement all the way round.
How much yarn do I need?
Álafosslopi in 100 g balls. Design 9: black heather 5 (6, 6, 7, 7), light gray 2 (3, 3, 3, 3) and white 1 in every size — 8 (10, 10, 11, 11) balls. Design 10: pond heather 5 (6, 6, 7, 7), light forest heather 1 (2, 2, 2, 2) and midnight blue 1 in every size — 7 (9, 9, 10, 10) balls. One set of amounts covers both sleeve lengths.
How are the neckbands different?
Both are K1, P1 rib on 4.5 mm double-pointed needles, decreased to 54 (54, 54, 56, 58) stitches on the first round. Design 9’s is 8 cm of light gray, folded in half to the inside and slip-stitched. Design 10’s starts with 2 rounds of light forest heather, 3 of midnight blue and 5 of pond heather; then comes a purl round in pond heather as the foldline and 10 rounds of rib, and it is folded back along the purl round and slip-stitched.
Anything to watch for?
A few small things. Each sleeve changes to the 6 mm needle and is increased to 42 to 48 stitches in that round — too few for a 40 cm circular — so you will need 6 mm double-pointed needles, which the list leaves out (our reading). Design 10’s hem and cuff rib is given in rounds, not centimetres: 10 striped rounds. And the pattern calls a circular needle a “twin pin”.
Is everything in the photo part of the pattern?
The sweater, Design 9, is. The light top showing at the back of his neck and his jeans are not.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 4 pages: the cover photo of Design 9; a page with a small photo of Design 10, the sizes, the materials for both designs, tension and all the instructions; a page with both charts and a key for each design; and Ístex’s back cover.
