Why you'll love it

  • Fulled in the machineKnitted to 27 cm, then washed at 40°C until it shrinks to about 23 × 25 cm — the pattern says it may take two washes.
  • Felted fringeNine lengths of doubled yarn go on along the bottom seam before the wash, so they felt with the bag.
  • Strap from the sidesFive stitches from each side are knitted flat to 60 cm and grafted together at the top — 120 cm before fulling.
  • Mirrors or buttonsThe pattern ends with small mirrors or buttons sewn on; the photo shows five round ones in a row across the top.
  • Plain knittingStocking stitch in the round on 8 mm, with no shaping — the wash does the rest.

Good to know

Lofn — your questions, answered

How big is the bag?
About 23 cm wide and 25 cm deep after fulling (9″ × 9¾″). It is knitted 50 stitches round to 27 cm and shrinks in the wash; the pattern says you may have to wash it twice to reach that size. The strap is knitted to 120 cm in all, or to the length you want; the pattern does not say how long it is after fulling.
How much yarn do I need?
2 skeins of Jöklalopi (100 g each) in black heather (0005). The pattern calls the yarn Bulky Lopi and lists only these 2 skeins for the bag, the strap and the fringe.
Which needle size?
8 mm, a 60 cm circular. The pattern prints “8 mm (US 13)”, but 8 mm is US 11 — go by the millimetres. There is no gauge: you knit to 27 cm and full the bag to size.
What about the white bag with the blue bottom?
Page 3 of the pattern is a photo of an idea: a white bag with a long blue fringe, the bottom dyed blue and a denim pocket sewn on the front. The pattern only says to knit a white or light-coloured bag, make the fringe longer, dye the bottom with fabric dye following the dye’s instructions and decorate it as you like. It gives no yarn, amounts or dye for it, and the pocket is not mentioned.
What else do I need?
A crochet hook to pull the fringe through (no size is given), a stitch holder for the strap stitches and a tapestry needle for grafting the strap and sewing the bottom. To finish: small mirrors or buttons — the photo shows five — and, if you line the bag, lining fabric and matching thread. None of these are in the materials list.
Anything to watch for?
The pattern does not say where the round starts, and it does not matter: the bag is a plain tube, and the two 5-stitch strap groups sit exactly opposite each other, so they become the sides when you fold the bag flat to sew the bottom (our reading). “Needle holder” in the strap instructions means the stitch holder. The lining is optional: you cut it using the bag as a template; the pattern gives no fabric amount.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 4 pages: the cover photo, one page with the materials, size, instructions, finishing, fulling, lining and ideas, a photo of the white idea version, and Ístex’s back cover.
