Gloves or mittens?
Gloves, with five separate fingers. A glove lets you use your hands without taking it off: driving, the dog lead, a phone, a zip. For long spells standing still in a hard frost a mitten is warmer, because the fingers share one pocket of air; for everything else, these.
Will they fit me?
They come in one size in a men's cut, and the knit stretches, so they fit most men's hands. The women's version on this site is the same pattern and colours on a smaller hand.
What is the eight-petalled rose?
An eight-pointed star that reads as a flower seen from above: a traditional Icelandic knitting motif and one of Varma's oldest patterns, also on Varma's hat and headband. Here it is knitted in white into the back of each hand, so it shows when you hold a cup or a steering wheel.
How do they feel to wear?
Soft, light and close-fitting: a light knit with enough stretch to follow the hand, and a ribbed cuff that stays put under a sleeve.
How do I wash them?
By hand or on a 30 °C wool programme with wool detergent. Press the water out without wringing, pull the fingers back into shape and dry flat.
