- Natural black wool
- Icelandic sheepskin
- Every skin one of a kind
A whole Icelandic sheepskin in natural black, with long, loose locks over a soft leather back. It is the boldest of our sheepskin colours: on a pale wooden floor or a light sofa it stands out; on dark boards or a slate hearth it adds depth and warmth.
Black on Icelandic sheep is rarely one flat colour — it ranges from blue-black to brown-black, and in warm light it can take on a brownish sheen.
Each rug is a single skin, so the shape and the length of the wool differ a little from one to the next. The size is about 85 × 62 cm (33 × 24 in), measured top to bottom at the longest point and across the widest part of the middle.
From Sauðárkrókur, North Iceland.
Looking after your sheepskin
Shake it outdoors and brush the wool with a wool comb or slicker brush. Blot spills with a damp cloth and let it dry away from direct sun and heat. Never put it in the washing machine. Read our full guide to cleaning a sheepskin rug.

Care
-
Regular Cleaning: Vacuum the rug weekly or bi-weekly, and give it a good shake outside to remove dirt and maintain its appearance.
-
Restoring a Matted Rug: Use a wire slicker brush to gently untangle and fluff up the fibers. Brush in the direction of the hair growth, being careful not to over-brush.
-
Removing Stains: For stains or spills, gently scrape with the edge of a knife or blot with a damp cloth. After removing the stain, dab with clean water and let it dry. A wool comb can be used to fluff the rug afterward.
-
Washing the Rug: Avoid washing the rug, especially in a machine, as it can damage the sheepskin. If necessary, hand wash gently in lukewarm water with wool shampoo, rinse thoroughly, squeeze out excess water with towels, and dry on a rack or line, but not in direct sunlight. Brush once dry.

Why you'll love it
- One of the breed's two base coloursEvery Icelandic sheep is, at heart, black or brown (moorit); grey and white are patterns laid over that base. A black skin is that base colour on show.
- Never repeatedOne sheep gives one skin, so the shape, the sheen and the way the locks lie on your rug belong to it alone.
- From the north of IcelandOur sheepskins come from Sauðárkrókur in Skagafjörður, a fjord and farming region on Iceland's north coast.
