Description

Stúfur and Þvörusleikir are the third and fourth Icelandic Yule Lads, coming on 14 and 15 December. Both are kitchen thieves: Stúfur, the short one, was after the scraps in the frying pan, and Þvörusleikir licked the long stick the pot was stirred with.

On this ball Stúfur laughs with both hands in the air, and his brother holds up a wooden spoon in each fist, against a wine-red sky with lilac stars. Painted by hand from the inside of the ball after Brian Pilkington's drawings, it measures about 8 cm (3.1 in) and comes in a lined red box, with a gold cord for hanging.

Questions people ask before they buy

Who are Stúfur and Þvörusleikir?

The third and fourth Yule Lads, due on 14 and 15 December. The National Museum of Iceland describes Stúfur as rather short and says he is sometimes called Pönnuskefill, the pan scraper, because he used to pinch scraps from the frying pan. Þvörusleikir went for the þvara, the long wooden or iron tool a pot was stirred with, and licked it clean.

Is he Shorty or Stubby?

Both are in use. Stúfur means a stub, the bit left when something is cut short, and it is also a pet name for a little boy. The publisher of this ball calls him Shorty, and so do we.

Why does Þvörusleikir hold spoons and not a þvara?

Spoon is the nearest English word, which is how he became Spoon Licker. The painter has given him one wooden spoon in each hand.

Is this a ball for a child's tree?

It is a breakable decoration rather than a toy. Hang it high, and let the children find Stúfur laughing on one side and the spoons on the other.

Will I pay duties when it arrives?
