Overview
What's in the kit
Fern Flower by Olga Lipnickaya, an Ístex single pattern: a women’s round-yoke sweater in pink heather Léttlopi, with a white yoke of green fern fronds above a ring of red fern flowers, white zigzags above the hem and on the sleeves, and a folded green collar. The pattern tells the old Slavic tale behind it: ferns never really bloom, but the fern flower appears for a short time and brings luck to whoever finds it. The pattern’s light red heather (1408) is no longer made; this kit has 9434 crimson red in its place.
Included
- Icelandic Léttlopi wool yarn — yarn for the largest size is included, so every size is covered
- Knitting pattern in English (PDF) — emailed right after purchase

How it is knitted
Knitted in the round from the bottom up. Body and sleeves start with 14 rounds of K2, P2 rib in pink on 4 mm, then a white zigzag border on 4.5 mm (chart 1), and carry on in pink to the underarms. They are joined for the round yoke — chart 2, 52 rounds: a pink and white zigzag, a ring of red fern flowers, then green ferns climbing on white to the neck, with six decrease rounds worked into the chart; the smaller sizes leave out a few marked rounds. The collar is K1, P1 rib in green on 4 mm, 6–8 cm deep, folded to the inside and sewn down.
