Description

Elina Grande is Tove Richter’s redesign of her classic Elina, knitted in chunky Álafosslopi. It is worked in the round from the top down, starting at the neckline, so you can try it on as you go. Light ash grey with the yoke in three blues: light denim, light indigo and indigo. Tove Richter is a Norwegian designer who knits almost exclusively with Icelandic wool.

Which size should I knit?

There are seven sizes, XS to 3XL, with a chest of 83, 92, 97, 106, 111, 120 and 129 cm all round (32¾–50¾″). The body is 40–46 cm to the underarm in the short version or 49–53 cm in the long one, and the sleeves 46–50 cm.

Does the kit cover the long body and the long neckline?

The kit holds 9 balls of 0054 light ash heather — the long body in 3XL — and one ball of each blue, which covers every size in either length with the short neckline. The 20 cm long neckline takes a second ball of the neckline colour, which is not in the kit. Light ash per size: short body 4–8 balls, long body 5–9.

How is it knitted?

From the top down in the round. You cast on at the neck, work the short or long neckline, then short rows at the back, and increase through the yoke chart with twisted lifted stitches. After dividing for body and sleeves, the chart continues for a few more rounds; hem and cuffs finish with 7 cm of k2, p2 rib on 4.5 mm needles.

Anything to watch in the colourwork?

The pattern marks a colour-dominance change at row 39: the designer holds the two yarns one way for the yoke and switches them for the body chart. It also notes that in sizes M and L the chart does not meet exactly under the arms, which does not show on the finished sweater.

What does the kit with needles include?

ADDI needles in the sizes the pattern names: 6 mm (US 10) circular needles in 40, 60 and 80 cm, a 4.5 mm (US 7) 80 cm circular needle, and 4.5 mm and 6 mm double-pointed needles. The four stitch markers and tapestry needle the pattern mentions are not included.
