Good to know

Astrid — your questions, answered

Can I still buy the colours in the photos?
Yes. All six are still made by Ístex: Álafosslopi light indigo (9958), ash (0054), midnight blue (0709), fuchsia (9969), chartreuse (9965) and indigo (9959). Our shop calls 0054 light ash heather, 9969 fuchsia heather and 9965 chartreuse green heather, so go by the colour numbers.
Which size should I knit?
Four sizes, S to XL, with a chest of 97, 101, 106 and 111 cm. By our check that is the body’s stitches without the two steek stitches and before the front bands are added, at the pattern’s gauge, to within 1 cm. The body is long — 72, 74, 76 and 78 cm from the hem to the underarm — and the sleeves are 46 to 49 cm. Compare with a cardigan that fits well before you choose.
How much yarn do I need?
Álafosslopi in 100 g balls: light indigo (A) 7 (7, 8, 8), ash (B) 3, and one ball each of midnight blue, fuchsia, chartreuse and indigo — 14 (14, 15, 15) balls in all.
Where are the pockets?
On the fronts. When the body measures 46 (48, 50, 52) cm, each pocket opening starts 11 (12, 14, 15) stitches in from the purl stitch at the front edge and is 19 stitches wide — about 14½ cm at the pattern’s gauge (our calculation). The linings are knitted first, 19 stitches by 18 cm, and knitted into the body in place of the opening stitches; later the opening is edged with 4 rows of rib in light indigo and the lining is sewn to the inside.
How does it close?
With 7–8 press studs sewn to the front band, as the pattern lists. The bands are knitted without buttonholes. In the photos one band has small dark round shapes that look like buttons; the pattern lists only press studs and does not mention buttons.
Do I have to cut my knitting?
Yes. The round begins and ends with a purl stitch at the centre front. At the end you weave in the ends but pull the ones next to the purl stitches through to the right side, sew twice by machine with small straight stitches through each column of purl stitches, and cut between the sewn rows. The ribbed bands are then knitted from the held stitches and sewn on, and their facings hide the machine stitching on the inside.
Is anything unclear in the pattern?
Only small things: a typo (“When patt in complete”), and the list leaves out stitch holders, a tapestry needle and the sewing machine. The stitch counts all add up (our check).
Is everything in the photos part of the pattern?
The cardigan is. The dark navy dress and the pink tights are not.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 4 pages: the cover photo; a page with a small full-length photo, the sizes, materials, gauge, notes and all the instructions; a page with the two charts and the colour key; and Ístex’s back cover.
