Afmæli, the Anniversary sweater, is a free Icelandic sweater knitting pattern by Védís Jónsdóttir. Afmæli means anniversary, and the leaflet is marked “ÍSTEX for 20 years, 2011”. It is one round-yoke lopapeysa charted in five colourways: brown, blue and black for adults, grey and green for children.
About the free sweater knitting pattern
- Adult sizes S, M, L and XL: chest 89, 98, 107 and 115 cm all the way round, with women’s and men’s lengths.
- Children’s sizes 8–10 and 10–12 years: chest 80 and 89 cm.
- Léttlopi, 50 g balls: 7, 7, 8 or 9 balls of the main colour for an adult sweater.
- Gauge: 18 stitches and 24 rows to 10 cm on 4½ mm needles, with 3½ mm needles for the rib.
Body and sleeves are knitted in the round and joined for the yoke. A small patterned band sits above the 4 cm rib, and the 8 cm neckband is folded to the inside.
Knit it from a kit
Our kits for the three adult colourways each hold the pattern and the Léttlopi for size XL:
- The brown kit: murky with white and black sheep, 14 balls.
- The blue kit: stone blue with black heather and white, 14 balls.
- The black kit: black sheep with light beige and seven yoke colours, 19 balls, with 1414 violet heather for 9417 dark wine (no longer made by Ístex) and 1407 pine green heather for 1405 bottle green.
Dagný is our own grey and pink colourway. The children’s colourways have no kit.
