Good to know

Álfar — your questions, answered

Can I still buy the colours in the photo?
Five of the six. Garnet red (1409), black (0059), golden (9426), glacier blue (1404) and heaven blue (1402) are still made by Ístex; orange (1410) is no longer made. Our Álfar kit uses 1704 apricot in its place. Our shop calls 9426 golden heather and 1402 heaven blue heather, so go by the colour numbers.
Which size should I knit?
Four sizes — S, M, L and XL — with a chest of 86, 95, 104 and 113 cm all the way round, 55, 57, 59 and 61 cm from the hem to the underarm, and sleeves of 45, 47, 49 and 51 cm to the underarm. The chest is the body’s stitches at the underarm; the front bands are knitted separately and sewn on, so they come on top of that (our reading). Above the border the body is about 7 cm wider all the way round than at the chest (our calculation).
How much yarn do I need?
Léttlopi in 50 g balls: garnet red (A) 7 (7, 8, 8), black (B) 4 (5, 5, 5), and one ball each of orange (C), golden (D), glacier blue (E) and heaven blue (F) — 15 (16, 17, 17) balls.
Do I have to cut my knitting?
Yes. The body is knitted in the round with 2 purl stitches at the centre front. You pull the yarn ends through to the right side along the purl stitches and sew twice by machine through each chain of purl stitches with small straight stitches, so the stitching catches the ends. The pattern says not to cut until the left band is made. Each band has a 3-stitch facing that is sewn to the inside, over the machine stitching.
How are the hood and the toggles made?
The hood is knitted back and forth in black from the band stitches and the neck stitches: a decrease row and 5 rows of rib on 4 mm, then stocking stitch on 4.5 mm with the 8 band stitches at each edge kept in rib. Stitches are increased three times on either side of the centre 21 stitches. At 33 cm — or the length you prefer — the stitches are divided in half and grafted together on top. For the closure, two strands of black are twisted into a cord; the toggles are sewn with it to the left front where the rib band meets the knitting — the lowest about 20 cm from the hem, the top one at the neckline, the rest evenly between — and loops of the same cord go on the right front opposite them.
Is anything unclear in the pattern?
A few small things. The hem rib is knitted back and forth, not in the round — the front is open from the start. Only the body has a colour border; the sleeves are plain red above the rib. The finishing calls the toggles “buttons” once (“loops … opposite the buttons”). The pattern gives no toggle size, and its list leaves out a sewing machine, stitch holders, markers and a tapestry needle.
Is everything in the photo part of the pattern?
The cardigan is, with the hood lying down behind the neck. The toggles are in the pattern’s list but are not included. The blue jeans are not part of the pattern.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 4 pages: the cover photo; a page with a small photo, the sizes, materials, gauge, notes, the body, sleeves and yoke, the finishing, both front bands, a photo of the hood from the back and the hood; a page with the rest of the toggle instructions, both charts and the colour key; and Ístex’s back cover.
