Why you'll love it

  • Two yarns as oneOne strand of Plötulopi and one of Einband are knitted together: jasper red with midnight blue makes a deep, heathered red; ivory beige with white makes the pale pattern.
  • Stars, then panelsA band of pale stars, diamonds and crosses round the base of the yoke, then tall pointed panels that narrow towards the neck.
  • Your lengthA shorter and a longer length for both the body and the sleeves, 4 cm apart, with one set of yarn amounts.
  • Folded neckbandShort rows raise the back of the neck; the rib is knitted to 8 cm at the front and folded in half to the inside.

Good to know

Aðventa — your questions, answered

Can I still buy the colours in the photos?
Yes. All four are still made by Ístex: Plötulopi jasper red (1427) and ivory beige (1038), and Einband midnight blue (0709) and white (0851). Our shop calls 1427 jasper red heather, so go by the colour numbers.
Why two different yarns?
Plötulopi is unspun Icelandic wool in 100 g plates; Einband is a fine 1-ply lace yarn in 50 g balls. In this pattern one strand of each is always knitted together, on 5.5 mm needles — 15 stitches to 10 cm. The pairs are A with C (jasper red and midnight blue) and B with D (ivory beige and white); the chart key shows each pair as one square, red or pale.
Which size should I knit?
Five sizes — S, M, L, XL and 2XL — with a chest of 90, 98, 106, 116 and 125 cm all the way round; it matches the body’s stitch count at the pattern’s gauge (our check). The body is straight, with no shaping at the sides.
Shorter or longer — how do I choose?
The pattern gives two lengths: 34 to 42 cm or 38 to 46 cm from the hem to the underarm, and sleeves of 44 to 48 cm or 48 to 52 cm, depending on the size. The longer one adds 4 cm to both. The materials list gives one set of amounts for both lengths.
How much yarn do I need?
Plötulopi in 100 g plates: jasper red (A) 3 (3, 3, 4, 4) and ivory beige (B) 1 in every size. Einband in 50 g balls: midnight blue (C) 4 (4, 4, 5, 5) and white (D) 1 (1, 1, 2, 2). That is 4 plates and 5 balls in S, M and L, and 5 plates and 7 balls in XL and 2XL.
How is the neckband shaped?
After 3 rounds of K1, P1 rib, the rib is knitted back and forth across the back in three pairs of short rows, wrapping a stitch at each turn: first 3 stitches before the shoulder markers, then at the markers, then 3 stitches past them, so the back of the neck sits higher. Then the rib goes on in the round until it measures 8 cm at the front. It is bound off loosely, folded in half to the inside and slip-stitched down.
Is everything in the photos part of the pattern?
The sweater is, in the pattern’s own colours. The jeans are not.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 4 pages: the cover photo; a page with the sizes, materials, gauge, a close-up photo and the instructions for the body, sleeves, yoke and the start of the neckband; a page with the rest of the neckband, the finishing, the yoke chart and the colour key; and Ístex’s back cover.
