Léttlopi vs Álafoss Lopi: Which Icelandic Wool Yarn Should You Choose?

Short answer: Léttlopi and Álafoss Lopi are both 100% pure Icelandic wool from the same sheep, but they are different weights. Léttlopi is a light worsted / aran weight yarn, while Álafoss Lopi is a bulky weight yarn that is roughly twice as thick. Choose Léttlopi when you want a classic lopapeysa, lighter sweaters, hats and mittens you can wear indoors and out. Choose Álafoss Lopi when you want maximum warmth, a fast chunky knit, or cosy outerwear and blankets. Below is the full breakdown, with gauge, needle sizes and how many balls you actually need.

Léttlopi vs Álafoss Lopi at a glance

Both yarns come from Ístex, the historic Icelandic mill, and both are made from 100% new Icelandic wool. The single biggest difference is weight: Léttlopi is about half the thickness of Álafoss Lopi. That one fact drives everything else, from needle size to how warm and heavy the finished garment feels.

What is Lopi yarn, and what makes Icelandic wool special?

Lopi is the family name for yarns spun from the wool of the Icelandic sheep, a breed kept pure for more than a thousand years. The magic is in the fleece. Icelandic wool is dual-coated: a long, glossy, water-shedding outer fibre called tog, and a soft, airy, insulating inner fibre called þel. Spun together, they create a yarn that is remarkably warm for its weight, breathable, and naturally water-resistant thanks to the wool's lanolin.

Léttlopi and Álafoss Lopi are two members of that family. They share the same fibre and the same rustic, slightly hairy character. They simply differ in how thick the strand is, which changes what they are best suited to make.

Léttlopi: the everyday Icelandic yarn

Léttlopi (the name means "light Lopi") is the most popular and versatile yarn in the range. It is a light worsted to aran weight, sold in 50 gram balls of roughly 100 metres, and it knits up at about 18 stitches over 10 cm on 4.5 to 5 mm needles. If you are only going to try one Icelandic yarn, this is the natural place to start.

Because it is lighter, Léttlopi gives you more control and a more wearable fabric. It is the traditional choice for the lopapeysa, the iconic Icelandic yoke sweater, and it is just as happy as hats, mittens, scarves and children's garments. A women's size lopapeysa typically takes around 600 grams, or about 12 balls, though always check your specific pattern.

Léttlopi comes in a huge palette of heathered colours, which is what makes the multi-colour yoke patterns sing.

Álafoss Lopi: the bulky classic

Álafoss Lopi is the bulky workhorse of the family. Sold in 100 gram balls of about 100 metres, it is roughly twice as thick as Léttlopi and knits up fast at about 13 stitches over 10 cm on 6 to 6.5 mm needles. Despite the thickness, it stays surprisingly light, because Icelandic wool is full of air.

This is the yarn for serious winter warmth: heavier sweaters and cardigans, outdoor jackets, hats that block the wind, and cosy blankets and cushions. Because each stitch covers more ground, Álafoss Lopi is also the obvious pick when you want to finish a project quickly, or you are newer to colourwork and want your yoke to grow before your eyes.

How to choose between them

The decision usually comes down to three things: how warm and heavy you want the finished piece, how fast you want to knit, and what your pattern calls for. Here is the simple rule of thumb.

A quick way to decide which Lopi to reach for.

Choose Léttlopi if you want: a traditional lopapeysa, a sweater you can wear most of the year, finer colourwork detail, or garments for children. It is the more wearable, more versatile of the two, and the easiest to recommend to a first-time Icelandic knitter.

Choose Álafoss Lopi if you want: the warmest possible knit, a chunky modern look, a quick finish, or homeware like blankets and pillows. It is built for deep winter and instant gratification.

One important note on patterns: the two yarns are not interchangeable stitch for stitch, because their gauges are different. If a pattern is written for Léttlopi, knit it in Léttlopi (or rework the maths). A handy shortcut some knitters use is holding two strands of Léttlopi together to roughly match Álafoss Lopi, but the cleanest result always comes from using the yarn the pattern was designed for.

Which is better for a lopapeysa?

For a classic, wearable lopapeysa, Léttlopi is the traditional and most popular choice. Its lighter weight gives you a sweater that is warm without being bulky, drapes well, and shows off the fine detail of a multi-colour yoke. Most published lopapeysa patterns are written for Léttlopi, so you will have the widest choice of designs.

That said, plenty of beautiful lopapeysur are knitted in Álafoss Lopi when you want a heavier, chunkier sweater that knits up in a weekend. If this is your first sweater and you want to see fast progress, Álafoss Lopi is a forgiving and rewarding place to begin. New to the whole process? A pre-matched knitting kit takes the guesswork out by giving you the yarn, pattern and quantities together.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Léttlopi and Álafoss Lopi?

They are the same 100% Icelandic wool in different weights. Léttlopi is a light worsted / aran weight in 50 gram balls, knitted on 4.5 to 5 mm needles. Álafoss Lopi is a bulky weight in 100 gram balls, knitted on 6 to 6.5 mm needles, and is about twice as thick. Léttlopi suits lopapeysur and year-round garments; Álafoss Lopi suits chunky, very warm, fast-knitting projects.

What weight is Lopi yarn?

It depends on which Lopi. Léttlopi is a light worsted / aran weight, while Álafoss Lopi is a bulky weight. The wider Lopi family also includes Plötulopi (unspun), Einband (lace weight) and Bulky Lopi (Jöklalopi, the thickest), so the family spans almost every weight a knitter needs.

Is Icelandic Lopi yarn itchy?

Lopi has a rustic, slightly hairy feel and can feel scratchy against bare skin straight off the needles, because it keeps the wool's natural structure. Many knitters find it softens noticeably after washing, and most lopapeysur are worn over another layer. If you are sensitive, a softer Icelandic blend such as Kambgarn or Einrúm is gentler next to the skin.

How many balls do I need for a lopapeysa?

For a women's size sweater in Léttlopi, plan on roughly 600 grams, which is about 12 balls, with the main colour taking the largest share. Quantities vary by size and pattern, so always follow the specific amounts listed in your pattern or kit.

Can I substitute Léttlopi for Álafoss Lopi?

Not directly, because their gauges differ. Knit each pattern in the yarn it was written for. As a rough workaround, two strands of Léttlopi held together can approximate Álafoss Lopi, but knit a gauge swatch first to be sure.
