Good to know

Vindbelgur — your questions, answered

Can I still buy the colours in the photo?
Nine of the ten. Sun yellow (1411, colour F) is no longer made by Ístex — three of the 29 stripes in each pass through the colour order, and the yarn the cowl is grafted closed with. Our kit for this pattern uses 1703 mimosa in its place, a warm golden yellow close to the yellow stripes in the pattern’s close-up photo. The other nine are still made: acorn heather (0053), pink heather (1412), ash heather (0054), straw (1418), lagoon heather (9423) and spring green heather (1406) in Léttlopi, and light denim heather (0008), purple (9044) and peach (9990) in Einband. Our shop calls 0054 light ash heather; go by the number, as the colour our shop calls ash heather is a different one (0056).
How big is it?
One size: 114 cm round and 11 cm wide, folded double. In the photo it is worn wrapped twice round the neck.
How much yarn do I need?
One 50 g ball of each of the ten colours, as the pattern lists — 7 balls of Léttlopi and 3 of Einband. Each colour makes only a few narrow stripes, so by our estimate you use roughly a third of each Léttlopi ball and a quarter of each Einband ball; expect leftovers of all ten.
What does “2-ply” Einband mean?
Einband is a fine yarn, and the pattern says it “must be 2-ply” — by our reading, two strands held together as one. Wind each Einband ball into two, or knit from both ends of the ball (our suggestion).
How are the colours joined?
Cast on 220 stitches with A and cut the yarn, leaving a 20–30 cm tail. Take the next colour and knit with the old tail and the new yarn together until the old one runs out — about 10 stitches — then knit the new colour on its own for a whole round, plus the stitches knitted with two colours and one more. Cut it, leaving a tail, and change in the same way. The pattern says this means no ends need to be woven in.
Is anything unclear in the pattern?
Two things, by our reading. The colour order starts with A, acorn heather, which is the cast-on: you cast on with A, cut it and start knitting with pink heather (B), so in the first pass through the order the first A is only the cast-on. And “fold the circle together with the RS out and graft” means folding the tube in half lengthwise, so the live stitches meet the cast-on edge — the 11 cm width, about half the tube, fits it.
Is everything in the photo part of the pattern?
The cowl is. The denim jacket and the black top are not.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 4 pages: the cover photo, one page with the materials, size, gauge, all the instructions and the colour order, a small photo and a close-up of the stripes, a blank page and Ístex’s back cover.
