How it is knitted
Knitted in the round from the hem on 6 mm: 120 (128, 136, 144) stitches, 6 cm of K2, P2 rib, then stocking stitch with an 18-stitch cable panel at the centre front — 3 purl stitches, a 12-stitch braid and 3 purl stitches — from a 27-row chart, with 4-over-4 crosses on a cable needle. At 24 (24, 25, 25) cm and again at 44 (44, 45, 45) cm two stitches are decreased at each side, so the tunic is a little wider at the hem than at the chest. At 50 (50, 52, 52) cm the cable is ended with decreases across the panel; after one more round the 10 centre-front stitches go onto a holder for a deep neck opening, and the work goes on back and forth with the neck edges decreased. At 57 (57, 59, 59) cm the underarm stitches go onto holders, and front and back are finished separately, with armhole decreases, to 78 (79, 81, 82) cm, where the shoulders are joined. The collar — 96 (100, 100, 104) stitches picked up round the neck — is 17 cm of K2, P2 rib, so it falls into a cowl, and the armholes get 2 cm of K1, P1 rib on the 4.5 mm circular.
