Good to know

Týra — your questions, answered

What is in the leaflet?
Two patterns by Védís Jónsdóttir from Ístex’s Lopi 25: No. 11, the Týra sweater, in sizes 3 to 7, and No. 12, the Týra hat, in children’s size 3–6. Each has its own materials list and instructions. The sweater has two colour charts, one for the sleeves and one for the body; the hat has no chart of its own and uses seven rounds of the body chart.
Can I still buy the colours in the photo?
Five of the eight are still made by Ístex: navy blue (9420), glacier blue (1404), spring green (1406), heaven blue (1402) and pink (1412). Light red (1408), sun yellow (1411) and lilac (1413) are no longer made. Our sweater kit uses 9434 crimson red for light red — the closest red Ístex still makes in Léttlopi, but a deeper, stronger red than the warm, slightly coral red in the photo; 1703 mimosa for sun yellow — a warm golden yellow, very close to the yellow in the photo; and 1702 milkyway for lilac — a pale bluish lavender, paler and bluer than the soft lilac in the photo. Of the hat’s four colours only sun yellow is no longer made, and our hat kit uses mimosa for it. Our shop calls 1406, 1402 and 1412 spring green heather, heaven blue heather and pink heather, so go by the colour numbers.
Which size should I knit?
The sweater has five sizes — 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7. The pattern prints them without a unit; by our reading they are ages in years (the hat is printed “children’s size 3–6”). The chest is 66, 71, 75, 80 and 84 cm, the length from the shoulder 38, 40, 42, 44 and 46 cm and the sleeve 26, 28, 30, 32 and 34 cm. The body’s 120 to 152 stitches come to the printed chest at the pattern’s gauge (our check), so it is the finished sweater’s measurement all the way round. The shoulders are dropped, so the armhole seam sits a little down the arm. The hat is one size; the pattern gives no measurements, and by our calculation its 80 stitches come to about 44 cm round.
How much yarn do I need?
Léttlopi in 50 g balls. Sweater: navy blue (9420) 2, pink (1412) 2 (2, 3, 3, 3) and one ball each of light red, glacier blue, spring green, sun yellow, lilac and heaven blue — 10 balls in sizes 3 and 4, 11 in sizes 5 to 7. Hat: one ball each of navy blue, spring green, sun yellow and pink — 4 balls.
Why do sizes 3 and 4 have one band fewer?
Beside rounds 50 to 56 of both charts the pattern prints “skip rnd size 3 (4)”, with a bracket over all seven rounds. In sizes 3 and 4 you leave out that whole band — two rounds of heaven blue with small yellow motifs between them and two rounds of lilac — on the body and on the sleeves. The girl in the photo wears one of these smaller sizes: there is no lilac band above the top red stripe.
How is the hat knitted from the sweater chart?
The hat says only to knit the pattern “for hat from chart 2” — the sweater’s body chart, printed next to the hat. Beside rounds 57 to 63 of that chart is a bracket marked “pattern hat 12”. Our reading: these are the hat’s 7 rounds (the hat is no. 12 in the leaflet) — they use exactly the hat’s four colours and match the band in the photo. The 80 stitches fit the chart’s 8-stitch repeat 10 times. The 4 plain rounds before the band have no colour named; they are navy in the photo.
Is anything unclear in the pattern?
A few things. At the armholes it says “Cast off 6 sts in each side” without saying whether that is 6 stitches at each side in all (3 from the back and 3 from the front) or 6 from each piece. Our reading is 3 + 3: the sleeves’ last 3 rounds are knitted back and forth, which makes a short slit that fits a small notch like this. The yarn amounts are the same either way. In size 3 the sleeve is printed as 26 cm, but the nine increases, every 7th round, end about 28 cm from the cast-on edge at the pattern’s gauge (our calculation) — in size 5 about 1 cm more than the printed 30 cm. Measure against the child, and if needed work the increases a round or two closer together (our suggestion). The finishing says to graft the shoulders, but the back is cast off, so join each front shoulder to the back’s cast-off edge with a neat seam (our suggestion).
Is everything in the photo part of the pattern?
The sweater and the hat are. The jeans, the daisy and the pine cone are not.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 4 pages: the cover photo of the sweater and hat, a page with a small photo, the sweater’s materials, sizes, tension, instructions, colour key and sleeve chart, a page with the sweater’s neckband and finishing, the hat with its own small photo, materials and instructions, and the body chart, and Ístex’s back cover.
