Good to know

Þórunn — your questions, answered

Can I still buy the colours in the photo?
Yes. Plötulopi 1038 ivory beige, Einband 1038 light beige and Léttlopi 1418 straw are all still made by Ístex. Our shop calls the Einband light beige heather, so go by the colour numbers. The leaflet does not say which of the two yarns the cardigan in the photo is knitted in.
Which yarn should I use?
Either. Option 1 is one strand of Plötulopi and one of Einband held together and knitted as one: 3 (3, 3, 4, 4) plates (100 g) of Plötulopi 1038 and 4 (4, 4, 5, 5) balls (50 g) of Einband 1038. Option 2 is a single strand of Léttlopi: 9 (10, 10, 10, 11) balls (50 g) of 1418 straw. Both give 20 stitches to 10 cm on 4.5 mm needles, and the instructions are the same. Our kit is option 1.
Which size should I knit?
Five sizes — XS, S, M, L and XL — with a chest of 88, 92, 96, 100 and 104 cm, 105, 109, 113, 117 and 121 cm round the hem (the pattern calls it bottom width — it matches the cast-on stitches all the way round), 58, 60, 60, 63 and 66 cm from the hem to the underarm, and sleeves of 45, 46, 48, 50 and 52 cm.
How is the texture knitted?
From an 8-round chart over 4 stitches. A stitch is slipped purlwise, with the yarn at the back, for 2 rounds and then crossed over the 2 stitches beside it with a cable needle — one way in round 3 and the other way in round 7, one stitch over — so the small cables zigzag. Rounds 4 and 8 are plain knit rounds. The pattern notes the cables can be crossed without a cable needle.
Do I have to cut my knitting?
Yes. Two purl stitches at the centre front form a steek: sew twice by machine through each chain of purl stitches with small straight stitches, cut between the sewn rows, and pick up the garter-stitch front bands on 4 mm — 4 stitches for every 5 rows.
Is anything unclear in the pattern?
Two small things. The key’s last cable reads “place 2 sts on cable needle in front, k2, k1 from cn”, but the symbol covers only 3 stitches; by our reading it is 1 stitch on the cable needle in front, k2, then k1 from the cable needle — the mirror of the other cable. And at the neckline, size XL should have 100 − 2 − 19 = 79 stitches; the pattern prints 78 (our check). One stitch is about half a centimetre at 20 stitches to 10 cm (our calculation). The materials list leaves out a sewing machine, stitch holders, markers and a tapestry needle, and gives no button size.
Is everything in the photo part of the pattern?
The cardigan is. The black top under it and the black trousers are not.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 4 pages: the cover photo; a page with a small photo, the sizes, the materials for both yarns, gauge, notes, the body, the sleeves, the start of the yoke, the chart and the key; a page with the rest of the yoke, the neckline, the finishing and both front bands; and Ístex’s back cover.
