Good to know

Tat — your questions, answered

Can I still buy the colours in the photo?
Dark brown (1032) and dark amber (1426) are still made by Ístex; our shop calls them chocolate heather and dark amber heather, so go by the colour numbers. Sea green (1422) is no longer made. It is colour B, and it is never knitted on its own: one strand of it is held with one strand of dark brown for the body, sleeves, yoke and upper rib, so it shows only as grey-teal flecks in the brown marl. Our kit uses forest green (0484) in its place — a dark greyish green, close to those flecks but not the same yarn.
Which size should I knit?
Four sizes, to fit 8, 10, 12 and 14 years — a chest of 80, 86, 91 and 97 cm, 34, 36, 39 and 41 cm from the hem to the underarm, and sleeves of 36, 38, 41 and 44 cm to the underarm. The chest matches the body’s stitch count at the pattern’s gauge (our check), so it is the finished sweater’s chest. The pattern gives no total length.
How much yarn do I need?
Plötulopi in plates of about 100 g: dark brown (A) 2 (2, 3, 3), sea green (B) 2 (2, 3, 3) and dark amber (C) 1 in every size — 5 plates for 8 and 10 years, 7 for 12 and 14.
How do the two strands work?
The pattern says to begin by winding two strands softly together. Dark brown with sea green (A+B) is the marl for the body, sleeves, yoke and the upper part of the rib; two strands of dark brown (A+A) are the first 2 cm of the hem and cuff rib, the brown of the sleeve band and the neckband; two strands of dark amber (C+C) are the amber in the band. Knitted this way it gives 14 stitches to 10 cm on 5.5 mm needles.
Why does the pattern say “Black sweater”?
It looks like a leftover heading above the yarn list (our reading). There is no black in this sweater: it is a dark brown and sea green marl with a dark amber band.
Are there mistakes in the pattern?
A few small ones. The 5½ mm needles are printed as US 7 — they are US 9 (the 4½ mm are US 7). In the yoke the sleeve stitches are printed “K (35) 37 (39) 41” — read it as 35 (37) 39 (41). The neckband line “dec evenly spaced on rnd 4 (6) 8 (10) sts” means decreasing 4 (6, 8, 10) stitches evenly in one round, which leaves 56 (58, 60, 62) (our calculation). And in sizes 8 and 12 the last sleeve increase falls right where the band starts; work it before you begin the chart (our calculation).
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 4 pages: the cover photo, a page with the materials, sizes, gauge, body, sleeves and the start of the yoke, a page with the rest of the yoke, the short rows, the neckband, the finishing and the sleeve chart, and Ístex’s back cover.
