Good to know

Sál — your questions, answered

What is it, exactly?
A shrug — a short ribbed piece with long sleeves that sits over the shoulders and leaves the front open. It is not a full sweater, though the pattern calls it one once, in the finishing. In the photo it is worn over a black top; the top, the necklace, the belt and the striped skirt are not part of the pattern.
What size is it?
One size, given as 36–42. It is 50 cm (19¾″) long at the centre back, with 40 cm (15¾″) sleeves. The pattern gives no chest measurement.
How much yarn do I need?
8 balls of Léttlopi (50 g each) in garnet red (1409) — for the back and both sleeves.
How does a rectangle become a shrug?
The back is a rib rectangle, 130 stitches wide, knitted back and forth to 72 cm. It is folded in half and marked, the top of each sleeve is sewn to a marker with the sleeve rib stretched, and the side seams are sewn up to the armholes. The pattern has no drawing, so the photo is your guide.
Anything to watch for?
The back has 130 stitches, which is not a multiple of 4, so the rows end with 2 knit stitches; on the way back, knit the knits and purl the purls as they face you to keep the rib (our reading). The pattern does not say how to work the new underarm stitches on the sleeves into the rib. It uses a crochet hook for the cast-on but gives no size, and the hook, the stitch markers and a tapestry needle are not in the materials list.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 4 pages: the cover photo, one page with the materials, size, crochet cast-on, instructions and finishing, a blank page and Ístex’s back cover.
