Ravenna hung over an old wooden frame outdoors, with the sea and sky behind and plants at the side, in the pattern’s original colours (sapphire blue heather is no longer made) — bands of golden, amber, ruby red, fuchsia, deep blue, teal, chartreuse, cypress green and black tweed crossing over and under each other, each outlined in ecru, inside a wide ecru moss-stitch border. The wooden frame is not part of the pattern

Good to know

Ravenna — your questions, answered

Can I still buy the colours in the photo?
Nine of the ten are still made by Ístex: ecru heather (9972), golden heather (9964), amber heather (9971), ruby red heather (9962), fuchsia heather (9969), teal heather (9967), chartreuse green (9965), cypress green heather (9966) and black tweed (9975). Sapphire blue heather (9968), the one blue, is no longer made. Our kit for this pattern uses space blue (1233) in its place — brighter than the deep, shaded blue in the photo. Our shop calls 9965 chartreuse green heather.
Is it a blanket or a rug?
The pattern uses both words for the same piece — the chart is headed “RUG” and the instructions “BLANKET”. It is 80 × 140 cm.
How is it knitted?
In intarsia: each colour area is knitted from its own small ball, and the yarns are twisted round each other at every colour change so that no holes form — the pattern explains this in a note. The chart covers the centre 82 stitches; the first and last 11 stitches of every row stay in ecru moss stitch, each side from its own ball (our reading), so the border grows with the blanket. There are many colour areas and a lot of ends to weave in; the pattern gives no difficulty rating.
How much yarn do I need?
Álafosslopi in 100 g balls: 4 of ecru heather and one each of the nine other colours — 13 balls. By our count of the chart, each colour uses well under its ball, so expect some of every colour left over (our calculation).
Is there anything to watch for in the pattern?
Two things. The “main colour” for the cast-on and the borders is never named — by our reading it is ecru heather (9972), the colour with 4 balls and the white square in the key, which also outlines the bands. And on page 3 the row numbers beside the chart do not line up with the drawn rows: 118 rows are drawn but only 113 are numbered, 125 to 237 (our count). Follow the drawn rows square by square — a ruler or row counter helps — and knit the last 16 border rows when the chart is finished, rather than counting to row 237. Page 2 (rows 17–124) is numbered correctly. The pattern gives no row gauge.
What else do I need?
The pattern lists only the yarn and a 6 mm (US 10) circular needle, 100 cm long, which the blanket is knitted back and forth on. You will also need a tapestry needle for the ends; the pattern lists no notions.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 4 pages: the cover photo; a page with a small photo, the materials, size, tension, a note on intarsia and the first part of the chart (rows 17–124); a page with the instructions, the colour key and the rest of the chart (rows 125–237); and Ístex’s back cover.
