Rebekka Kristjánsdóttir’s round-yoke sweater from Ístex’s Lopi 31 is knitted with one strand of Einband and one of Plötulopi held together, and worn with the purl side out. The Einband stays the same all the way; the body and sleeves are a pale Plötulopi, and the yoke darkens in steps as the Plötulopi changes towards the neck — there is no two-colour pattern. Two colourways, in sizes S to XL with men’s and ladies’ sleeve lengths: greytone — white, light ash, grey heather, dark grey and black heather with black heather Einband — and greentone — ivory beige, clover green, spruce green, marsh heather and black sheep with black sheep Einband. All twelve colours are still made.

Gauge
14 sts × 22 rows = 10 cm (4″) in stocking stitch on 5 mm needles, with Einband and Plötulopi held together.
Needles
5 mm (US 8) circular needles, 40 and 80 cm, for the body, the sleeves and the yoke
4 mm (US 6) circular needles, 40 and 80 cm, for the body rib and the neckband
4 mm (US 6) double-pointed needles for the cuffs
You will also need
Stitch holders for the underarm stitches and a tapestry needle for grafting and weaving in — the instructions use them, but the pattern’s list leaves them out. The sleeves move to 5 mm after the cuff, but the list has no 5 mm double-pointed needles (our note).
How it is knitted
Knitted in the round from the bottom up, with one strand of Einband (A) and one of Plötulopi held together; the Plötulopi is twisted with the next colour at each change. You knit stocking stitch with the knit side facing you, and at the end the sweater is turned so the purl side is outside — the pattern says it can be worn either way. The body is cast on with 136 (144, 152, 160) stitches in A+B on the 4 mm circular, worked in 3 cm of K2, P2 rib and then straight on 5 mm to 42 (44, 45, 46) cm. The sleeves are cast on with 40 (40, 44, 44) stitches in A+B on 4 mm needles, ribbed for 3 cm with 4 stitches increased in the last round, then increased at the underarm on 5 mm to 60 (62, 64, 64) stitches. Body and sleeves are joined for the round yoke: a 46-round chart with five decrease rounds, from 224 (232, 240, 248) stitches to 84 (87, 90, 93); the smaller sizes leave out marked rounds. The chart has no two-colour rounds: rounds 1 to 14 are A+B, then come A+C, A+D, A+E and, in the last round (left out in size S), A+F. After a round decreasing to 76 (76, 80, 84) stitches, the neckband is 4 (4, 5, 5) cm of K2, P2 rib on 4 mm in A+E, bound off loosely. The underarms are grafted and the ends woven in so they cannot be seen from either side.

Why you'll love it
- Purl side outKnitted as plain stocking stitch and turned at the end, so the purl side is outside; the pattern says it can be worn either way.
- A yoke that darkens in stepsThe Plötulopi changes colour towards the neck — in greytone from white to light ash, grey heather, dark grey and black heather — while the Einband stays the same.
- No two-colour knittingEvery round uses one Einband and one Plötulopi together; the yoke chart shows only where the colour changes and where to decrease.
- For men and womenFour sizes, S to XL, with a men’s sleeve of 49–53 cm and a ladies’ sleeve of 45–49 cm; Ístex shows it on a man and a woman.
