Smiling woman by a white wooden gate in Pífa, shown in the pattern’s own colours — a black flared skirt ending just above the knee, with a border of light beige and acorn zigzags around a black band of small white crosses, and a white eyelet-lace frill at the hem. Her white hat with a crocheted flower is Snjór, a different pattern from the same book; the black fur vest, black top, long black gloves and dark tights are not part of the pattern

Good to know

Pífa — your questions, answered

Can I still buy the colours in the photo?
Yes. All four are still made by Ístex: black (0059), light beige (0086), acorn (0053) and white (0051), all Léttlopi. Our shop calls 0086 light beige heather and 0053 acorn heather, so go by the colour numbers.
Which size should I knit?
Six sizes — 34, 36, 38, 40, 42 and 44 — with a knitted waist of 60, 63, 66, 70, 73 and 76 cm and a length of 52, 53, 54, 55, 56 and 57 cm. The waist is the knitted width at the cast-on edge (108 stitches at 18 stitches to 10 cm is 60 cm — our check); the elastic you sew on sets the fit, and the pattern says only to measure the elastic.
How much yarn do I need?
Léttlopi in 50 g balls: black (0059) 4 (4, 5, 5, 6, 6), light beige (0086) 1, acorn (0053) 1 and white (0051) 2 in every size — 8 (8, 9, 9, 10, 10) balls. If you add rounds for a longer skirt, you will need more black.
How is the waist finished?
There is no waistband or casing. Elastic is sewn close to the cast-on edge by machine with a zigzag stitch, so you need a sewing machine. The pattern gives no width or length for the elastic.
How is the frill knitted?
When the border is done, you turn the piece and knit the frill in white from the wrong side. To stop a hole forming where you turn, the pattern wraps a stitch: slip the first stitch of the right needle to the left needle, bring the yarn between the needles to the back, and return the slipped stitch. The lace alternates plain rounds with eyelet rounds — knit 2 together, yarn over, knit 1, yarn over, slip 1, knit 1, pass the slipped stitch over — with one increase round, 13 rounds in sizes 34 and 36 and 15 in the others. It is cast off very loosely in K3, P2, K1, P2.
Is anything unclear in the pattern?
A few small things. “Repeat rnd 8 and 9: 2 times … 3 times” means 2 or 3 more times — chart 3 runs to round 13 or 15 (our reading). The pattern does not say how to make the increases. And the 6 stitch markers, the sewing machine and the thread are used but not in the materials list.
Is everything in the photo part of the pattern?
The skirt is. The white hat with the crocheted flower is Snjór, a different pattern from the same book. The black fur vest, the black top, the long black gloves and the dark tights are not part of either pattern.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 4 pages: the cover photo, a page with the materials, sizes, gauge, all the instructions, the border chart and the colour key, a page with the lace chart and the chart for the increases in the body, and Ístex’s back cover.
