Good to know

Mark — your questions, answered

Can I still buy the colours in the photos?
Yes. All four are still made by Ístex: black heather (0151), tawny (9076), white (0851) and dark grey (9102), all Einband. Our shop calls 9076 almond heather and 9102 grey heather, so go by the colour numbers.
What size is it?
One size, M/L. The pattern gives no measurements and no gauge: the size comes from the stitch counts — the band is 96 stitches of K1, P1 rib, 6 cm deep, on 3 mm needles.
How much yarn do I need?
Einband in 50 g balls: one ball each of black heather (A), tawny (B), white (C) and dark grey (D) — 4 balls.
How do I start in the middle?
With a circular cast-on, written out in the pattern: lay the yarn in a circle, cast 9 stitches onto the needle round it, put 3 on each of three double-pointed needles and pull the tail to close the centre. On the first round you knit into the back of every other stitch — the loops made as yarn overs — to keep them the right way round.
What do the three lace rings look like?
By our reading of the chart, the tawny and the dark grey rings share one motif: rounded shapes outlined in eyelets, each with a short column of V-shaped decreases in the middle; the dark grey ring also has a zigzag line of eyelets above it. The white ring has large eyelet diamonds, each with a small diamond inside. The chart shows every round, with a 24-stitch repeat.
Is anything unclear in the pattern?
Small things. The 3 mm circular needles, 40 and 60 cm, are in the list, but the text does not say when to change to them. The text knits the 4th and 5th increase rounds before it says to change colour, so by our reading they are in tawny and in white; the chart agrees in its counts (24 rounds of pattern 2 and 17 of pattern 3, not counting the increase rounds), though it prints “pat 2 col C” and “pat 3 col D” on the line just above them. The materials list leaves out a tapestry needle.
Is everything in the photos part of the pattern?
The beret is. The grey fingerless mitts and the black leather jacket are not.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 4 pages: the cover photo of the top of the beret; one page with a small photo, the size, materials, the circular cast-on and all the instructions, the chart and its key; a blank page; and Ístex’s back cover.
