Good to know

Lopi 18 No. 29 — your questions, answered

Can I still buy the colours in the photo?
Two of the three. Black (0059) and white (0051), the colours of the yoke and the borders, are still made by Ístex. Green heather (9737), the main colour — the body, sleeves, ribs, yoke background and neckband — is no longer made. Our kit for this pattern uses 1231 garden green in its place: a close match, a touch darker and with less of the heathered look of the green in the photo.
Which size should I knit?
Four sizes by the child’s height — 122, 134, 140 and 152 cm — with a chest of 83, 88, 92 and 97 cm, a length of 46, 50, 54 and 58 cm to the centre front neck, and sleeves of 29, 33, 35 and 38 cm to the underarm. The pattern gives heights, not ages, so measure the child. The body has 108 (114, 120, 126) stitches from the rib to the underarm, which comes to the printed chest at the pattern’s gauge (our check), so the chest is the finished sweater’s measurement all the way round.
How much yarn do I need?
Álafosslopi in 100 g balls: green heather (9737, M) 4 (4, 5, 5), black (0059, A) 1 and white (0051, B) 1 in every size — 6 balls for 122 and 134 cm, 7 for 140 and 152 cm.
What do the + squares in the charts mean?
The key says: in sizes 122 and 134 knit them in green heather, in sizes 140 and 152 in black. So the two larger sizes have a little more black in the border and the yoke. The pattern still gives one ball of black for every size.
Are there mistakes in the pattern?
A few small ones. Size 152: the yoke says to knit 54 stitches across the front and across the back; it should be 55 each — the body has 126 stitches, and 55 gives the yoke total of 198 that the pattern prints (our calculation). Size 140: the sleeve puts 9 stitches on the underarm holder and the body puts 8, so you graft 9 stitches to 8; ease them together. On the sleeves, “in 1 st at beg and end of 2nd rnd” means increase 1 stitch at each end; work that first increase, then 4 (5, 6, 4) more every 6th round, to reach the printed 46 (48, 50, 52) stitches. The pattern calls a circular needle a “twin pin”, and its list leaves out a tapestry needle.
Is there a grown-up version?
Lopi 18 no. 28, by the same designer, is a sweater for women and men with a related yoke of zigzags and rings — a separate pattern.
Is everything in the photo part of the pattern?
The sweater is. The dark trousers are not.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 4 pages: the cover photo, a page with the materials, sizes, tension, both charts with their key and the instructions up to the yoke, a page with the rest of the yoke, the neckband and the making up, and Ístex’s back cover.
