Good to know

Lopi 18 No. 28 — your questions, answered

Can I still buy the colours in the photo?
Two of the three are still made by Ístex: white (0051) and oatmeal (0085) — our shop calls 0085 oatmeal heather. The main colour, black sheep tweed (9452) — the body, sleeves, ribs, yoke background and neckband — is no longer made. Our kit for this pattern uses 9975 black tweed in its place: it keeps the white tweed flecks, but it is blacker than the dark brown-black in the photo, so the white and oatmeal should stand out a little more (our reading).
Which size should I knit?
Five sizes, XS to XL, with a chest of 102, 106, 111, 115 and 120 cm and a length of 62, 65, 68, 70 and 72 cm to the centre front neck. Sleeves are 41, 43, 43, 45 and 45 cm for women and 46, 48, 48, 50 and 50 cm for men, and the body is 38 (40, 42, 43, 44) cm from the cast-on edge to the underarm. The chest matches the body’s stitch count at the pattern’s gauge (our check), so choose by the chest measurement you want — it is the measurement all the way round.
How much yarn do I need?
Álafosslopi in 100 g balls: black sheep tweed (9452) 7 (8, 8, 9, 9), white (0051) 1 (1, 2, 2, 2) and oatmeal (0085) 1 (1, 1, 1, 2) — 9 (10, 11, 12, 13) balls. The pattern gives one set of amounts for both sleeve lengths.
Anything to watch for?
On the sleeves, work the first increase on round 2, then 4 (5, 6, 5, 6) more, to reach the printed 52 (54, 56, 60, 62) stitches. Several yoke rounds are skipped in the smaller sizes; they are marked beside chart 2, and the start point for each size is marked under both charts. The needle list has no 6 mm double-pointed needles, but each sleeve changes to 6 mm with only 42 to 48 stitches — too few for a 40 cm circular — so you will need them (our reading). And the pattern calls a circular needle a “twin pin”.
Is there a children’s version?
Not in this leaflet. Lopi 18 no. 29, by the same designer, is a children’s sweater with a similar yoke of zigzag bands and small diamonds, in green with black and white — a separate pattern, which we also sell as a kit.
Is everything in the photo part of the pattern?
The sweater is. His pale trousers are not.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 4 pages: the cover photo, a page with a photo, the materials, sizes, tension, the start of the instructions, both charts and the key, a page with the rest of the instructions, and Ístex’s back cover.
