Good to know

Lopi 18 No. 22 & 23 — your questions, answered

Is this pattern No. 22 or No. 23?
Both. The leaflet is one sweater in two colour versions, which it calls Design 22 and Design 23, with one set of instructions and charts and a key for each design. Design 22 is dark gray with a white yoke and borders (the man on the beach and the person lying in the grass); Design 23 is monet, a mid-blue tweed, with navy (the man by the rock wall). Design 23 also starts the hem and cuffs with two purl rounds in navy and has a navy edge at the top of the neckband; otherwise the two are knitted the same way.
Can I still buy the colours in the photos?
For Design 22, yes: dark gray (0058) and white (0051) are still made by Ístex; our shop calls 0058 dark grey heather. For Design 23, navy (0118) is still made, but monet (9735), the main blue, is not. Our blue No. 23 kit uses 1234 blue tweed in its place — a similar mid-blue, a shade darker than the photo, whose tweed flecks are white, where monet has small red, pink and turquoise flecks.
Which size should I knit?
Three sizes — XS, M and XL; the pattern has no S or L. The chest is 97, 111 and 125 cm and the length 62, 68 and 72 cm to the centre front neck. Sleeves are 41, 43 and 45 cm for women and 46, 48 and 50 cm for men, and the body is 38 (42, 44) cm from the cast-on edge to the underarm. The chest matches the body’s stitch count at the pattern’s gauge (our check), so if you fall between two sizes, choose by how loose you like it.
How much yarn do I need?
Álafosslopi in 100 g balls. Design 22: dark gray (0058) 6 (7, 8) and white (0051) 2 in every size — 8 (9, 10) balls. Design 23: monet (9735) 6 (7, 8) and navy (0118) 2 (3, 3) — 8 (10, 11) balls; Design 23 also uses the navy for the purl rounds at the hem and cuffs and for the last 13 rounds of the neckband, which make its top edge and the part folded inside. One set of amounts for both sleeve lengths.
Anything to watch for?
The charts are drawn once for both versions — follow the key for your design. In size XS each sleeve puts 7 stitches on the underarm holder but the body puts 9, so you graft 7 stitches to 9; ease them together, as every other XS count is right. The sleeve border is not a whole number of repeats, so start where chart 1 marks “begin sleeve”; the motif breaks under the arm. In size XL, 8 stitches are decreased as body and sleeves are joined — the pattern writes this out. The needle list has no 6 mm double-pointed needles, but each sleeve changes to 6 mm with only 40 to 48 stitches — too few for a 40 cm circular — so you will need them (our reading). And the pattern calls a circular needle a “twin pin”.
Is everything in the photos part of the pattern?
Only the sweaters. On the beach, the black trousers are not; in the grass, the jeans and boots are not; by the rock wall, the jeans are not.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 4 pages: the cover photo (Design 22), a page with a small photo of Design 23, the materials for both designs, the sizes, tension and all the instructions, a page with both charts and the two keys, and a full-page photo of Design 22 in long grass with Ístex’s address.
