Woman by a wooden railing in the Lopi 12 no. 8 cardigan, shown in the pattern’s own colours — white and hip length, with a round yoke of white ovals with light beige centres set in light ash, light ash stripes at the neck, patterned light ash borders at the hem and cuffs, narrow light ash front bands and silver-tone clasps. Her white polo-neck top, headband and gloves, her cream trousers and the man’s dark yoke sweater (Lopi 12 no. 20, a different pattern) are not part of this pattern

Good to know

Lopi 12 No. 8 — your questions, answered

Can I still buy the colours in the photo?
Yes. All three are still made by Ístex: 0051, 0054 and 0086, all Álafosslopi. The leaflet prints only the numbers; our shop calls them white, light ash heather and light beige heather.
Which size should I knit?
Four sizes — XS, S, M and L — with a chest of 101, 108, 114 and 120 cm, a length of 51, 52, 54 and 56 cm to the centre front neck, and sleeves of 40, 42, 42 and 44 cm to the underarm. The body is knitted 27 (27, 28, 29) cm from the hem’s fold line to the underarm. The body’s 125 (133, 141, 149) stitches, leaving out the 2 purl stitches at the cut, come to 96 to 115 cm at the pattern’s gauge before the front bands are added (our check), so the chest is the finished cardigan’s width — choose by the width you want it to be.
How much yarn do I need?
Álafosslopi in 100 g balls: white (0051) 5 (5, 6, 6), light ash heather (0054) 3 and light beige heather (0086) 1 in every size — 9 (9, 10, 10) balls.
What closes the front?
Six hooks. The pattern gives no type, size or placing — it says only “Sew on band and hooks”. The photo shows silver-tone clasps from the neck to just above the hem. There are no buttonholes.
How are the hems made?
The body is cast on in light ash on 5 mm and knitted back and forth for 8 rows of stocking stitch, then 1 row is purled on the right side as the fold line; the body is joined into a round and the 8-round border from chart 1 is knitted, still on 5 mm, before you change to 6 mm and white. The sleeves are the same, with 8 rounds and a purl round. At the end the hems are folded back along the fold line and slip-stitched inside.
Is the front cut open?
Yes. A purl stitch runs up each side of the centre front; you sew two rows of machine stitching in the centre of each column of purl stitches and cut between them, so you need a sewing machine. The pattern also says the body, sleeves and yoke can be knitted back and forth instead: knit the first and last stitch of every row for a firm edge, and read the charts right to left on right-side rows and left to right on wrong-side rows.
Is anything unclear in the pattern?
A few small things. It says “See illustration on page 2”, but there is no illustration in the PDF; the text describes every step without it. The needle list has no 6 mm double-pointed needles, but each sleeve changes to 6 mm with only 38 (40, 40, 44) stitches — about 29 to 34 cm round (our calculation), too few for a 40 cm circular — so you will need them (our reading). The note says the neckband facing is worked back and forth, but the instructions purl 1 round for the fold line and then say 7 rows; the pattern does not settle which. And it calls a circular needle a “twin pin”.
Is everything in the photo part of the pattern?
The cardigan is. Her white polo-neck top, white headband, white gloves and cream trousers are not, and the man’s dark sweater is Lopi 12 no. 20, a different pattern.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 4 pages: the cover photo, a page with the materials, sizes, gauge and all the instructions, a page with the three charts and the colour key, and Ístex’s back cover.
